Poll question: Have you ever flown in a helicopter?
I missed my chance while in Alaska, but I don't regret it because there was no guarantee who would be in my group to a glacier. They're noisy SOB's anyway and I seem to live in some kind of fly zone...

1. Yes. I don't know much about aircraft but, I think....
it was a Chinook I flew in. What ever the USNavy uses.

2. Did it once over Kauai
then again over Kiluea on the big island. That was really fun to be above flowing lava, close enough to feel the extreme heat. We also did it over the Glaciers at Glacier National Park. We were way up over the glacier, I want to say about 3000 feet but I don't know how high they really go, when the door next to my son flew open. It was very scary and very cold!

3. Yes, I flew in a helicopter
It was cool but the circumstances for riding in it were awful...my friend and I were in the AF in Spokane and had a free weekend but were underage so we rode on motorcycles to Couer d'Laine Idaho (they had an 18 year drinking law then)...We went to a nightclub there and went outside to smoke a joint and got busted...We spent the night in jail and the next morning the squadron commander flew the helicopter in to pick us up and fly us back to Spokane...I don't remember ever thinking I was ever in as much trouble as that time, but things somehow worked out ok...

Anyways, I kinda enjoyed the ride but my friend said he felt like jumping out the whole time...

4. I did when I was two days old...
They flew me to Tucson regional medical center because I was born premature and about to die from pneumonia. :)

5. I did the Helicopter/glacier thing when I was in Alaska
The ice is the purest blue in places because of the lack of oxygen, and some of the crevices are very deep. I think I am subconsciously trying to kill myself because for a split-second I had an irrational desire to jump. weird, eh?

6. Yes quite a few times when I was in the army
Though the only time that I was ever nervous about it was once. The pilot told me that when they were sent to the Saudi for the First Gulf War that they had stripped the thing of paint to put desert camo on it. When they did they found that the bottoms of beer and soda cans had been soldered to the skin of the chopper to patch up bullet holes. Making the chopper at its youngest 20 years older and probably a lot older. The chopper was more than likely older or as old as me at the time.

10. Yes
only once, and it was amazing. It was a flight around Mount Danali on a very rare clear day. The pilot was impressive - we flew right up to the mountain, in and out of little valleys that barely seemed wide enough to accommodate us, and we saw Dahl's sheep up close, glaciers from above, and other fantastic sights. It was thrilling.

15. no, but i'd love to!
i grew up about a mile from sikorsky aircraft. helicopters flying around us were very natural to me as a kid. i hate to fly in airplanes, but i'd love to take a trip in a helicopter. i don't have the fear of them that i do airplanes. that makes no sense, but i think it's because i grew up with them.
