Poll question: Favorite logical fallacy?
Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 09:18 PM by undisclosedlocation
List is quick and dirty and comes from:
http://www.minichino.com/classes/communication.html
I make no representations as to this person or persons' expertise, except that it's greater than mine.:)

I skipped one to get ad hom on there. Let's face it, there's no way that couldn't be on the poll.

If you're burning for a description of these, go here:
http://www.nobeliefs.com/fallacies.htm
I could cut and paste, but I'm not sure which or any are derived from copyrighted materials, and wouldn't want to get DU in trouble. (If they aren't there, try Google.)

Edit: Changed two per suggestions from below. As they were the only ones with no votes, that's all the changing I can do.

3. God Exists. How Do I Know? I Read It In the Bible.
Which, according to the Bible, God wrote.

9. But that's a question of interpretation, ie what the phrase in fact means
I was told that Cogito ergo sum to Descartes meant that I think and can never imagine not thinking, therefore I will go on forever. Could be utter horseshit of course; that's what I get for picking up philosophy on street corners.:D

13. utter horseshit
but don't take my word for it, that would be fallacy of authority ;)

by "cogito ergo sum", descarte was reasoning that something must "exist" in order to be doing the thinking. what he couldn't conceive of was something thinking without existing. so, i think, therefore, i am.

17. Thank you! Finally, the definition of "street smarts."
I was referencing the circularity of the statement but I like your interpretation. Actually, I feel like that some time, can't imagine I'd be finished. Now I'll have to reflect on that thought...forever.

7. yeah, that's my favorite too
I think it's the one freepers use most often. Whenever they bring up Bill Clinton while arguing about Bush, there's a non sequitur in there some place...

This is my "favorite." So many of their conclusions simply don't follow the argument.
