Preliminaries: The DU Worst Song Ever Tournament
Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 08:42 PM by Arkana
OK, people, here's the deal. There are a LOT of bad songs out there. We've all heard one--Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey," anything done by William Hung, hell--even "MacArthur Park" has had a mention. So, I thought I'd hold a tournament to determine DU's WORST SONG EVER.

Here are the rules:
1. Your song, in order to be nominated, must get at least two additional votes. If you could, reply to the post where the song is mentioned with a "Second!" or "Third!" so it's easier to locate votes.

2. This tournament has room for 32 songs. I was going to do an NCAA-size bracket, but that was a bit much, so I decided to do half. Therefore, if you don't get yours in before I accept the 32 required, it doesn't get accepted. Maybe when we get to the Worst Song NIT.

3. You have to mention specific tunes, not blanket statements like "Anything by the Doobie Brothers" or something like that. Give me a specific song that stands out in its crapfulness.

Well, that's it! Let's begin the selection process!

EDIT: I know that there's another thread out there that looks similar to this with my name on it--but this idea popped into my head AFTER that thread got approximately 20 responses, so changing it would have been a bit confusing.

EDIT 2: I also should mention that if you have nominated a song, you can still second or third another song--it just, um, can't be your own, cause that would be stupid.

EDIT 3: I will post a reply to the last vote on a song to say that it has been seeded. Just wanted to clear that up too.

EDIT 4: Also, you can vote for a song that you didn't necessarily think was the WORST ever, but one that you thought was bad enough to make it into the tournament.

19. Holy shit, I'll second that one!
And that one gets special mention because not only is it a pure piece of shit song, it's a pure piece of shit song done by a band that used to mean something. Unlike most pop drivel, that's done by useless clueless fucks to begin with, "We Built This City" was done by a band that used to rock, that used to be cool, that used to, as I said, mean something.

I nearly cried when I heard that song for the first time. The band that represented so much of the 60's cashing is so freakin' hard and with such lame material.

85. Is this song hated because it's by the remnants of Jefferson Airplane?
I personally don't think the song is that bad (I admit the lyrics are cheesy as hell, but it has a decent beat), but then again I like good cheesy 1980's pop.

Is this song only really hated because it was done by the remnants of Jefferson Airplane or would people strongly hate this song just as much if it was done by some random one hit wonder?

2. "Let the Eagle Soar" by John Ashcroft
"America We Stand As One" and "America's Shame 2005" are nearly as bad.

America's Shame 2005 would take the title but for one minor sticking point: if you leave out us, and about nine freepers, no one has ever heard Gloria Jane's unlistenable song. Everyone in America has had the opportunity to hear "Let the Eagle Soar."

6. Teen Angel
Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 08:15 PM by achtung_circus
by Mark Dinning

That fateful night the car was stalled upon the railroad track
I pulled you out and we were safe, but you went running back

Teen angel, can you hear me?
Teen angel, can you see me?
Are you somewhere up above
And I am still your own true love?

What was it you were looking for that took your life that night?
They said they found my high school ring clutched in your fingers tight

Teen angel, can you hear me?
Teen angel, can you see me?
Are you somewhere up above
And I am still your own true love?

Just sweet sixteen, and now you're gone
They've taken you away.
I'll never kiss your lips again
They buried you today

Teen angel, can you hear me?
Teen angel, can you see me?
Are you somewhere up above
And I am still your own true love?

I suppose that's a good thing. And, yes, it's actually worse than "Proud to be an American".

Pay attention to the lyrics, if you haven't already, for another gut-busting laugh (or a slight touch of nausea, perhaps). "I touched the rain...I felt a tear...U-S-AAAAAAA....AMERUHCUH!"

Uh, Breaker One-Nine, this here's the Rubber Duck
You got a copy on me Pig-Pen? C'mon

Uh, yeah 10-4 Pig Pen, fer sure, fer sure
By golly it's clean clear to Flag-Town, C'mon

Uh, yeah, that's a big 10-4 Pig-Pen,
Yeah, we definitely got us the front door good buddy,
Mercy sakes alive, looks like we got us a convoy

Was the dark of the moon, on the sixth of June
In a Kenworth, pullin' logs
Cabover Pete with a reefer on
And a Jimmy haulin' hogs
We 'as headin' fer bear on I-One-Oh
'Bout a mile outta Shaky-Town
I sez Pig-Pen, this here's the Rubber Duck
An' I'm about to put the hammer on down

Cause we gotta little ol' convoy, rockin' through the night
Yeah we gotta little ol' convoy, ain't she a beautiful sight?
Come on an' join our convoy, ain't nothin' gonna git in our way
We're gonna roll this truckin' convoy, cross the USA
Convoy... Convoy...

Come on Beavis and Butthead fans-they spit out their soda while watching the video!

(check out these lyrics!)
when u lie
kiss your baby bye bye bye
and if you're true
the whole wide world will laugh with you
when we see
nothing's wrong with you and me
with you time will tell
it might even bring a wedding bell
if u think that i'm a loser
well you suck, cause u know i ain't nothin'
but a user of your love
can't get enough
girl it's true
the whole wide world is smilin' with you

push th' little daisies and make em come up

sometimes i know
sometimes i'm on the go
but i'm comin' back
so don't give me no flack
it's all you
and it's me too
it's your world
you're the girl
happier than shit
things that might go click with me
click with you
is that love?
is that love? oh.

push th' little daisies and make em come up (x8)

watch the litle daisies grow, little daisies grow
now just push th' the little daisies and make 'em come up
watch them grow watch them grow
as i push the little daisies and make 'em come up
make 'em come up
make 'em come up
make 'em come up, say

push th' little daisies and make em come up (x7)

(edit: added lyrics. Come on-this song really sucks!)

Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 10:57 PM by Nevernose
here in Vegas, during the National Finals Rodeo, they booked him, and advertised him in every medium conceivable for months. They ended up refunding the money to the ticket holders (both of them?) and giving them away free. A first-hand source of mine, an employee there, tells me that they still only had half the seats filled.

Now that I think about it, I actually saw him open for Garth Brooks a few years prior to that, and he sucked even then.

And it's not even an original song, it's a cover.

40. Seasons in the Sun - Terry Jacks
Seasons In The Sun

Goodbye to you my trusted friend
We´ve known each other since we
Were nine or ten
Together we´ve climbed hills and trees
Learned of love and abc´s
Skinned our hearts and
Skinned our knees

Goodbye my friend it´s hard to die
When all the birds are singing
In the sky
Now that spring is in the air
Pretty girls are everywhere
Think of me and i´ll be there

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the hills that we climbed were
just seasons out of time

goodbye papa please pray for me
i was the black sheep of the family
you tried to teach me right from wrong
too much wine and too much song
wonder how i got along

goodbye papa it´s hard to die
when all the birds are singing in the sky
now that the spring is in the air
little children everywhere
when you see them i´ll be there

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the songs like the
seasons have all gone
we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like
the seasons have all gone

goodbye michelle my little one
you gave me love and helped
me find the sun
and every time that i was down
you would always come around
and get my feet back on
the ground

goodbye michelle it´s hard to die
when all the birds are singing in
the sky
now that the spring is in the air
with the flowers everywhere
i wish that we could both be there

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the hills that we climbed were
just seasons out of time

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like the
seasons have all gone

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like the
seasons have all gone

we had joy we had fun we had
seasons in the sun
but the wine and the song like the
seasons have all gone

59. Truthfully...
.... I never found McArthur Park that hard to get. It is about a relationship that is over and that the protagonist thinks he'll never see the likes of again.

Melodramatic? Definitely. Bombastic? Sure. But not on the 7th level of insipidness like songs such as "Afternoon Delight".

61. I nominate "Wives and Lovers"
"Wives And Lovers"

(Burt Bacharach & Hal David)

Hey! Little Girl
Comb your hair, fix your makeup
Soon he will open the door
Don't think because there's a ring on your finger
You needn't try anymore

For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
I'm warning you...

Day after day
There are girls at the office
And men will always be men
Don't send him off with your hair still in curlers
You may not see him again

For wives should always be lovers too
Run to his arms the moment he comes home to you
He's almost here...

Hey! Little girl
Better wear something pretty
Something you'd wear to go to the city and
Dim all the lights, pour the wine, start the music
Time to get ready for love
Time to get ready
Time to get ready for love

***********************************************

Excuse me while I go PUKE!!!!

207. That's a GREAT song
According to Hal David, it was written tongue-in-cheek, and he should know -- he wrote the lyrics.

Incidentally, I never see "Run for Your Life" nominated for worst-song lists. It's a masterpiece of misogyny and violence.

But Saint John Lennon always gets a pass for it.

62. "Indiana Wants Me" by R. Dean Taylor

Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there
I wish I had you, to talk to

If a man ever needed dying he did
No one had a right to say what he said about you
And it's so cold and lonely here without you
Out there the law is coming
I've been so tired of running

It hurts to see the man that I've become
To know I'll never see the morning sunshine on the land
I'll never see your smiling face or touch your hand
If just once more I could see
You, our home and our little baby

I hope this letter finds it's way to you
Forgive me love for the shame I've put you through and all the tears
Hang on love to the memories of those happy years
Red lights are flashing around me
Good Lord it looks like they found me

Indiana wants me, Lord I can't go back there (This is the police. You are surrounded. Give yourself up)

64. Little Green Apples (Roger Miller?)
...And if that's not loving me, then all i've got to say, God didn't make little green apples, and it don't rain in indianapolis in the summer time. And there's no such thing as dr. seuss or disney land and mother goose, no nursery rhymes. God didn't make little green apples, and it don't rain in indianapolis in the summer time. And when myself is feeling low, i think about her face and go and ease my mind.

Sometimes i call her up, at home, knowing she's busy. And ask her if she can get away, meet me and maybe we can grab a bite to eat. And she drops what she's doing and she hurries down to meet me, and i'm always late. But she sits waiting patiently, and smiles when she first sees me, because she's made that way.

I always picture some loser stumbling around in a stupor looking for salt shakers

Wastin' away again in Margaritaville
Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
Now I think Hell, it could be my fault

I blew out my flip-flop
Stepped on a pop-top
Cut my heel had to cruise on back home
But there's booze in the blender
And soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on

OK OK I know Jimmy's got his fans, esp in FL, and he did make a lotta money off of wastin' away in Margaritaville so it must have hit a nerve...I'll go easy on him since he's a loyal Dem and leave his signature song alone--OK but what about this jingle that goes with his chain of hamburger joints? ...see last line --"I'M just a cheeseburger in Paradise"...(!?!) --is there a more terrible line in musical history? I suppose you could argue he achieved his goal of being deliberately laughably bad and therefore maybe immune to criticism. -----------

Cheeseburger in paradise (paradise)

I’m just a cheeseburger in paradise

I'm not a Jimmy Buffet fan myself, so I'm not familiar with all of his songs. Those lyrics do look terrible. Buffet, however, has done concerts to raise funds for Democratic politicians, John Kerry among them. Perhaps they served cheeseburgers.

Still, my vote has got to be Paul McCartney's "Frog Song" from 1984, the terror of it all made worse by the fact that he has re-released it.

93. Escape (The Pina Colada Song) - Rupert Holmes
I was tired of my lady
We'd been together too long
Like a worn-out recording
Of a favorite song
So while she lay there sleeping
I read the paper in bed
And in the personal columns
There was this letter I read

"If you like Pina Coladas
And getting caught in the rain
If you're not into yoga
If you have half a brain
If you'd like making love at midnight
In the dunes on the Cape
Then I'm the love that you've looked for
Write to me and escape."

I didn't think about my lady
I know that sounds kind of mean
But me and my old lady
Have fallen into the same old dull routine
So I wrote to the paper
Took out a personal ad
And though I'm nobody's poet
I thought it wasn't half bad

"Yes I like Pina Coladas
And getting caught in the rain
I'm not much into health food
I am into champagne
I've got to meet you by tomorrow noon
And cut through all this red-tape
At a bar called O'Malley's
Where we'll plan our escape."

So I waited with high hopes
And she walked in the place
I knew her smile in an instant
I knew the curve of her face
It was my own lovely lady
And she said, "Oh it's you."
Then we laughed for a moment
And I said, "I never knew."

That you like Pina Coladas
Getting caught in the rain
And the feel of the ocean
And the taste of champagne
If you'd like making love at midnight
In the dunes of the Cape
You're the lady I've looked for
Come with me and escape

You know:

"Trapped in a mine that had caved in
And everyone knows
The only ones left were Joe and me and Tim

Timothy, Timothy, God what did we do?

<snip>

My stomach was full as it could be
And nobody ever got around to finding Timothy!"

127. Actually, Willis Alan Ramsey wrote it...
He called it "Muskrat Candlelight" & it was an amusing little tune on his debut album, "Willis Alan Ramsey"--also his only album so far. There are some excellent tunes on that album--now available again, I believe.

He was a fine Texas singer-songwriter who fled to Scotland just as the Cosmic Cowboy thing began. The royalties from "Muskrat Love" certainly aided his escape. He's back in the USA, still performing & writing.

Yes, the version by Captain & Tennille truly sucked.

134. Notable Contender
BUT maybe it's SO bad it's good? I guess I have more tolerance for the bizarre than the sappy. Muskrat Love concept is unique in the history of music, reaching the Pinnacle of Absurdity. (I could imagine some Dr Seuss illustrations to go with the lines above)
Or maybe Kermit would sing it...

My criteria for Worst is that I wish that a certain song had never entered my consciousness on any level. I don't feel that way so much about Muskrat Luv.

Don't Captain and Tenille have an even worse contribution?

They had the first hit single of it, though there is an original version by the songwriter Willis Alan Ramsey, who I think was mentioned on here recently. Their version is slightly better than Captain and Tenille's, but I'm not particularly a fan of the song.

133. Dominque By the Singing Nuns
:puke:

The Singing Nun is actually Sister Luc-Gabrielle, member of a Belgian Dominican order convent. She also recorded as Sister Sourire, French for "Sister Smile." This song, about St. Dominic, Spanish-born priest and founder of her order, has French lyrics:
Dominic....anic, anic
Il parcourt l'Europe a pied,
Scandinavie au Provence
Dans la sainte pauvrete.

which translate to:
Dominic....anic, anic
He travels all around Europe on foot,
Scandinavia to Provence (France)
In saintly poverty
Alternate Version -- Lyrics from “The Singing Nun” (Movie lyrics) sung by Debbie Reynolds

Dominique, nique, nique I will tell of Dominique
His goodness to acclaim
And I pray the song I sing
Will some simple pleasure bring
That the world shall know his name!

I will tell of Dominique as I sing this little song
And when I sing the chorus all the world will sing along!

Dominique, nique, nique it was good Saint Dominique
He lived for you and me
From his labors long ago
Came a better world I know! And his love shall always be!

“Though I’m poor”, said Dominique as he spoke unto the Lord,
“I will be your humble servent and your love is my reward”!

Dominique, nique, nique I will follow Dominique
His burdens will I share
For his courage will I pray
His teachings to obey! His words shall be my prayer!

By the kindness of his heart and the labor of his hand
He brought love and understanding as he wandered through the land!

Dominique, nique, nique I will tell of Dominique
His goodness to acclaim
And I pray the song I sing
Will some simple pleasure bring! All the world shall know his name!

Dominique the mighty warrior was a soldier of ther Lord
His armor was devotion and the Gospel was his sword!

Dominique, nique, nique it was good Saint Dominique
He lived for you and me
From his labors long ago
Came a better world I know! And his love shall always be!

Through the blazing heat of summer and the chill of winter snow
I will follow Dominique! In his footsteps I will go!

Dominique, nique, nique I will follow Dominique
His burdens will I share
For his courage will I pray
His teachings to obey! His words shall be my prayer!

Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 08:14 AM by rhino47
this was just plain horrible.
:puke:
when I make it to hell being the god hating liberal I am
that song will be on the jukebox in hell.

Havin' my baby
What a lovely way of sayin'
How much you love me
Havin' my baby
What a lovely way of sayin'
What you're thinkin' of me
I can see it, face is glowin'
I can see in your eyes
I'm happy you know it

That you're havin' my baby

You're the woman I love
And I love what it's doin' to ya

Havin' my baby

You're a woman in love
And I love what's goin' through ya

The need inside you
I see it showin'
Whoa, the seed inside ya
Baby, do you feel it growin'
Are you happy you know it
That you're

Havin' my baby

I'm a woman in love
And I love what it's doin' to me

Havin' my baby

I'm a woman in love
And I love what's goin' through me

Didn't have to keep it
Wouldn't put ya through it
You could have swept it from you life
But you wouldn't do it
No, you wouldn't do it
And you're havin' my baby

I'm a woman in love
And I love what it's doin' to me

Havin' my baby

I'm a woman in love
And I love what's goin' through me

Havin' my baby (havin' my baby)
What a lovely way of sayin'
How much you love me

Havin' my baby
(havin' my baby
I'm a woman in love
And I love what's goin' through me

Boggles the mind that that was one of the biggest songs of last year. It's basically hookless and totally obnoxious but, along with "In Da Club" (another good contender for horrible status) I learned both of them because I used to work with a bunch of high school kids with middling to horrible taste in music. Pretty much all modern hip-hop/pop radio crap sucks ten times worse than all the seventies AM pop that is mostly getting nominated here, IMHO.

179. Okie from Muskogee by Merle Haggard
Its an oldie but I thought it would be a natural for a DU worst song ever tournament:

We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee;
We don't take our trips on LSD
We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street;
We like livin' right, and bein' free.

I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all

We don't make a party out of lovin';
We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo;
We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy,
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.

And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all.

Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear;
Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen.
Football's still the roughest thing on campus,
And the kids here still respect the college dean.

We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA....

Bleech...

186. Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 09:30 AM by Wickerman
By Cher

was born in the wagon of a travellin' show
My mama used to dance for the money they'd throw
Papa would do whatever he could
Preach a little gospel, sell a couple bottles of Doctor Good

CHORUS
Gypsys, tramps, and thieves
We'd hear it from the people of the town
They'd call us Gypsys, tramps, and thieves
But every night all the men would come around
And lay their money down

Picked up a boy just south of Mobile
Gave him a ride, filled him with a hot meal
I was sixteen, he was twenty-one
Rode with us to Memphis
And papa woulda shot him if he knew what he'd done

-edit-- and it just goes on...

187. "She Got a Nose Job" - Alfred E. Neumann
Edited on Tue Apr-19-05 09:30 AM by Jersey Devil
Alfred E. Neumann's "She Got a Nose Job" is a cardboard flexi-disc that was included as a free Mad Magazine giveaway around 1962. Later compiled on the Mad vinyl album compilation they put out a year later ("Mad 'Twists' Rock 'n Roll"), to capitalize on the dance craze 'o the day with more cheesy greasy rock 50's rock-type filler and snide lyrics (sample: "She got a nose job/She got a nose job/ It's now turned up/ instead of hangin' down/ She got a nose job/ She got a nose job/ and now she's the prettiest gal in town!"). In a vocal arrangement reminiscent of The Ravens, with a great basso profundo intoning "Nose Job!" ever now and then. But most likely, an Italian doo-wop group. Righteous, Retro, and Retroussee...

198. 2nd "My Sharona" --
Check out these lyrics..... (I was foggy about what comes after "My Sharona" so looked it up) Seems to be a car/woman analogy with a hint of pedophile, but also brings appliances to mind--Sharona, by Eureka
----------

Ooh my little pretty one, pretty one.
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona?
Ooh you make my motor run, my motor run.
Gun it comin' off the line Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up.
Such a dirty mind. Always get it up for the touch
of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. M M M My Sharona...

Come a little closer huh, ah will ya huh.
Close enough to look in my eyes, Sharona.
Keeping it a mystery gets to me
Running down the length of my thighs, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up. Such a dirty mind.
Always get it up for the touch
of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. M M M My Sharona...

When you gonna give it to me, give it to me.
It is just a matter of time Sharona
Is it just destiny, destiny?
Or is it just a game in my mind, Sharona?
Never gonna stop, give it up.
Such a dirty mind. Always get it up for the touch
of the younger kind. My my my i yi woo. M M M My Sharona...

Will you do me a favor and support my nomination of "The Frog Song" by Paul McCartney? I assure you that it is one of the worst songs ever known to human kind. I know the only reason it hasn't been seconded is that most DUers have been spared the horror of listening to it, but it was a top 20 song in the UK in 1984. I'm trying to find an audio file to support my case.

Worst piece of shit ever.

Who's peekin' out from
Under a stairway
Callin' a name
That's lighter than air?
Who's bendin' down to
Give me a rainbow?
Everyone knows it's Windy.

Who's trippin' down the
Streets of the city
Smilin' at
Everybody she sees?
Who's reachin' out to
Capture a moment?
Everyone knows it's Windy.

And Windy has stormy eyes
That flash at the sound of lies
And Windy has wings to fly
Above the clouds.
Above the clouds.

And Windy has stormy eyes
That flash at the sound of lies
And Windy has wings to fly
Above the clouds.
Above the clouds.
