The worst song you've ever heard--what is it?
My vote goes to "Raindrops Are Fallin' On My Head" (forget who wrote it) or anything performed by 98 Degrees.

2. "I've Never Been To Me" -- Charlene
Of the So Bad It's Good category, I'm all about "How Do You Do" by Mouth & McNeal.

"Raindrops" is one of those Bacharach/David numbers, so somebody will be along momentarily to tell you that it is the apotheosis of pop greatness. Performed by BJ Thomas, it was the theme from Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid for reasons that bewildered the little kid version of me and still bewilder me today.

38. "Never Been to Me" has my vote too
That whole spoken part in the middle is great to listen to if you need to purge your stomach quickly. :puke:

Not that the lyrics are any better:

"I've been undressed by kings and seen some things that a lady just ain't sposed to see." :puke:

From the first time I heard that song, it made me go insane it was so bad. I can tolerate a lot of bad songs, but I can't take this song.

7. Paper Roses, by Marie Osmand
Imagine hearing this, approximately once an hour, for months on end at an Automated Country music radio station on the graveyard shift. Auuuff!

Paper Roses
Marie Osmond

I realize the ways your eyes deceived me
with tender looks that I mistook for love
So take away the flowers that you gave me
and send the kind that you remind me of.

Paper Roses, Paper Roses,
oh, how real those roses seemed to me.
But they're only, Imitation,
like your imitation love for me.

I thought that you would be a perfect lover.
You seemed so full of sweetness at the start.
But like a big red rose that's made of paper,
there isn't any sweetness in your heart.

Paper Roses, Paper Roses,
oh, how real those roses seemed to me.
But they're only, Imitation,
like your imitation love for me.

It was online; some shitty country lady with synthesized music singing *'s praises. Though calling it a song is probably a stratch. Oh, it was here maybe a month ago...

Yeah, that was scary.

15. Grateful Dead, "Uncle John's Band"
Okay, maybe not literally the worst. But I swear... I go to the university gym for exercise most days, and half the time they've got the PA system radio on to the local oldies station, which means it's guaranteed that at least five times a week I will hear "Aqualung", Neil Young's "Old Man", and "Uncle John's Band", only the first of which I can hear more than once a week without suffering excruciating agony.

The Grateful Dead had fantastic posters, crappy songwriting, crappy arrangements, crappy instrumentals, and crappy vocals. One out of five doth not a band make...

(Donning my fire-retardant Web suit...)

17. The Battle Hymn of Lt. Calley
By Terry Nelson & C Company...I actually have this 45, found it years ago at a Goodwill store...

Once upon a time there was a little boy who wanted to grow up
And be a soldier and serve his country in whatever way he could
He would parade around the house with a sauce pan on his head
For a helmet, a wooden sword in one hand and the American flag in the other
As he grew up, he put away the things of a child but he never let go of the flag

My name is William Calley, I'm a soldier of this land
I've tried to do my duty and to gain the upper hand
But they've made me out a villain they have stamped me with a brand
As we go marching on

I'm just another soldier from the shores of U.S.A.
Forgotten on a battle field then thousand miles away
While life goes on as usual from New York to Santa Fe
As we go marching on

I've seen my buddies ambushed on the left and on the right
And their youthful bodies riddled by the bullets of the night
Where all the rules are broken and the only law is might
As we go marching on

While we're fighting in the jungles they were marching in the street
While we're dying in the rice fields they were helping our defeat
While we're facing V.C. bullets they were sounding a retreat
As we go marching on

With our sweat we took the bunkers, with our tears we took the plain
With our blood we took the mountains and they gave it back again
Still all of us are soldiers, we're too busy to complain
As we go marching on

When I reach my final campground in that land beyond the sun
And the great commander asks me, "Did you fight or did you run?"
I'll stand both straight and tall stripped of medals, rank and gun
And this is what I'll say:

Sir, I followed all my orders and I did the best I could
It's hard to judge the enemy and hard to tell the good
Yet there's not a man among us would not have understood

We took the jungle village exactly like they said
We responded to their rifle fire with everything we had
And when the smoke had cleared away a hundred souls lay dead

Sir, the soldier that's alive is the only once can fight
There's no other way to wage a war when the only one in sight
That you're sure is not a VC is your buddy on your right

When all the wars are over and the battle's finally won
Count me only as a soldier who never left his gun
With the right to serve my country as the only prize I've won
As we go marching on
Glory, glory hallelujah glory, glory hallelujah

18. Dio - "Rock 'N' Roll Children"
Edited on Mon Apr-18-05 08:03 PM by ReadTomPaine
His guy has been writing goofy music forever.

"It was starting to rain
On the night that they first decided
It was blinding with snow
On the night that they ran away
They were found in the dark
But they never returned
Just like somebody slammed the door

She was meant to be wild
He was nearly a child
But they only could feel each other
They were paper and fire
Angel and liar
The devil of one another

Then they were thrown to the ground
With a terrible sound
Just like somebody broke a heart

Rock 'N' Roll Children
Alone again
Rock 'N' Roll Children
Without a friend
But they got Rock 'N' Roll

It was starting to rain
On the night that they cried forever
it was blinding with snow
On the night that they screamed goodbye

They were lost in the dark
And they never returned
Just like somebody slammed the door

On Rock 'N' Roll Children
Alone again
Rock 'N' Roll Children
Without a friend"

:puke: :puke:

"Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle. If I ever ran across him in public, I'm pretty sure I would not be able to keep myself from savagely assaulting him...

There's two things I know for sure
She was sent here from heaven and she's Daddy's Little Girl
As I drop to my knees by her bed at night
She talks to Jesus and I close my eyes and I thank God for all of the joy in my life
Oh but most of all...

For butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer
Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair
"Walk beside the pony Daddy, It's my first ride
I know the cake looks funny Daddy, But I sure tried"

Oh with all that I've done wrong I must have done something right
To deserve a hug every morning and butterfly kisses at night...
Sweet 16 today, she's looking like her momma a little more every day
One part woman the other part girl, to perfume and make-up ribbons and pearls
Trying her wings out in a great big world, but I remember...

Butterfly kisses after bedtime prayer
Sticking little white flowers all up in her hair
"You know how much I love you Daddy
But if you don't mind, I'm only gonna kiss you on the cheek this time...

And that's only PART of this evil bastard song. It goes on. And on. And on...

Unfortunately, it does NOT end with his daughter giving him butt-fly kisses in HIS FUCKING COFFIN...

Argh! I need a drink. Or three.

When the people I work with had the radio on, this absolutely insufferable song came on every 10 minutes one summer. This song is SO BAD, I can't even believe it exists. The first time I heard it, I thought a little girl was singing it. Obviously I hadn't heard the lyrics yet. To post the lyrics here would be to get this thread locked.

They're nasty things, but the worst part is people who think that they're the highest form of the musical art. To my mind, fingernails down a black-board are distinctly preferable.
