Wendy's Workers Facing Layoffs In Wake Of Finger Chili Scandal
<snip>

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Wendy's top executive said a woman's claim that she found a finger in a bowl of chili has hurt their bottom line.

The company's president and chief executive said, "Our brand reputation has been affected nationally." Tom Mueller said sales have dropped at franchises in Northern California, forcing layoffs and reduced hours.

The fast- food chain has hired private investigators, set up a hot line for tips and doubled its reward to $100,000 for information leading to the finger's original owner.

Mueller added that Wendy's employees have passed polygraph tests, and "there is no credible evidence" the finger part came from Wendy's.

Investigators still don't know how an 1.5 inch-long fingertip got into a woman's bowl of chili.

1. Damn. Wendys is going all out.
They are even polygraphing the employees!

I am still wondering what happened with the police search of the woman's home and that angle. The thought that she might have planted the finger would not surprise me.

2. What reputation?
I haven't eaten at a Wendy's for over two years for two reasons. These both happened within a month or two of each other.

1. I got a spicy chicken sandwich which was RAW.
2. I saw a woman working there run her fingers through her hair, scratch her head for 60 full seconds, then pick up a baked potato WITHOUT WASHING HER HANDS OR PUTTING ON GLOVES. I just got out of line and walked away. That's the last time I've been in a Wendy's.

8. I just don't eat at Wendy's
Or I should say I rarely eat at Wendy's. I had a burger there once right before the election because it was the only thing opened in downtown Philly.

Personally Fast Food has no appeal for me except my once a month cravings for an Arby's Roast Beef sandwich.

5. If that happens, and the lady planted it, can the workers sue her?
I'm assuming that if it turns out the woman planted the finger, the workers who were laid off will sue her. My question is, would they have a legal leg to stand on?

I'm sure that whatever happens, there will be a lot of finger-pointing. <rimshot> Thank you folks, I'll be here all week, two shows nightly at 9 and 11. Try the buffet, it's fabulous.

6. She lied. Wendy's screwed up though.
They could have offered a 100K reward earlier--even if the finger had come from an undocumented worker (who'd be unklikely to file w/ OSHA or workers comp., ) in a Wendys suppliers'processing plant, SOMEONE might have come forward...and they could have settled this quietly.

I hate their food anyway.

7. The woman who found the finger planted it, imo
and while I don't go to Wendy's I think it's a shame that due to this that innocent people are facing reduced hours and possible layoffs. Some people have to take jobs where they can get them, and someone making $7.00 per hour is probably going to take the brunt of this deception.
