Ultimate Dallas Cowboy thread.
Someone asked, "Any Cowboy fans here?" Well, for Du, I am probably the ultimate. I have seen the Cowboys in person play in every decade. I attended the 94 NFC championship game when "classy" Jerry Rice spit in Kevin Smith's face. I saw Meredith, cried when Morton couldn't beat the Colts and O'Brian kicked the winning field goal in Superbowl 5 (remember, "next year's champions), and rejoiced beyond belief when they finally cleared the hurdle and defeated a young and coming Dolphins team in Superbowl 6.

Now they're playing well, and they have the best coach in football. However, they are still young and will have a hard time dealing with the high expectations that are being heaped upon them. The haters are right; the schedule has not entered its toughest part, and an angry and desparate Bucs team await them in Tampa next week.

I actually agree with McNabb (I thoroughly dislike the fans of the Eagles, but McNabb is a good guy) who says the Eagles are still the team to beat in the east. Their win yesterday will probably be a springboard for them, and they are about to face some fairly easy teams the next few weeks.

So, here is my realistic prediction. Barring injuries, the Cowboys will finish 9 and 7 and achieve a wild card. That means they have to finish 4 and 6 the rest of the way. They should win against Washington, Buffalo, and New York at home. And I am predicting one win on the road - the last game in New Orleans.

This is still a young and inexperienced team with a lot of growing to do. The schedule gets tougher, and injuries may come into play. I think this is a very safe prediction. Sure beats the 5 and 11's and 6 and 10's everyone (including myself) were predicting at the start of the season.

1. a 9-7 record doesn't ensure a wildcard spot
Edited on Mon Oct-20-03 08:51 AM by VermontDem2004
But I don't think they can beat Buffalo, they have a strong defense and a great offense, they stubbled a bit after going 2-0 but I think Buffalo can win the AFC East.

edited: for a dumb mistake I made.

2. No it doesn't, but if you look at the current records
It's a possibility. Brad Sham and Babe Laufenberg were going over the stats - somewhere around 50% of teams finishing 9 and 7 go to the playoffs. It goes into the 90% when finishing 10 and 6.

If the game were being played in Buffalo, I would give it to you. What makes it a possible win in my book is that the game is being played in the Temple (Texas Stadium).

3. Any win a possibility
Edited on Mon Oct-20-03 08:56 AM by VermontDem2004
in the NFL, the Chargers can still win all of their games in their season just based on the fact it is a possibility. But I think Buffalo is just too tough. After all the Cowboys lost at home to the Falcons(1-6) by two touchdowns.

4. And you should also see that maybe Dallas can beat the big teams
That was the first game - Campo hangover. You can keep wishing all you want, but I think my prediction is pretty realistic. Remember, Dallas would have to finish 4 and 6 to achieve 9 and 7. At this point, I really like these odds. Major injuries, of course, are always a determining factor and could change that, but things are looking pretty good at this point.

6. Campo hangover
after 4 preseason games and 8 weeks of training camp? I am not saying they can't do it, I like their chances if they only have to win 4 out of their next 10 games but I just don't think Buffalo is a shoe-in. Like you said they are still young but Buffalo is experienced and have too much power on defense starting from the D-line all the way to the secondary. I picked Buffalo to win their division and I still think they can do it.

8. Buffalo came out like gangbusters
and then stumbled. They are playing better, but head to head at this point, Dallas would be the favorite.

And yes, definite Campo hangover. You are talking about training camp and pre-season. Remember, these guys had three years of Campo, and had only won 15 games in three years. The Cowboys were about to lose in Campo style to the Giants the next week when fate took over. That is a hangover, and it has taken this long to recover and believe in themselves. Not only that, you are talking about the first game of the season, they have now won five in a row.

Okay, so they lose to Buffalo. They could possibly get a win against someone else. Dallas has Carolina at home, and that could possibly be a win. I'm leaving so many holes open, and I am making a very safe prediction.

12. I agree
I never said Dallas was out of it and yes Buffalo stubbled but played a tougher schedule then the Cowboys. But I don't think they can beat Buffalo but it can be done, Dallas can win their next 10 games but it doesn't mean they will do it but it can be done. But if only need to win 4 out of their next 10 games to reach 9-7, I like their chances but still alot of football to be played.

7. Hmmmmmm?
Being a forty year fan of the Cowboys, I'm predicting they'll go 10-6.
That means they have to achieve a 5-5 split the rest of the season.
And that, my friend, will give them the NFC East title!

I think this is a pretty realistic view, given the momentum they have got going and the way the defense is playing. They are doing a good job of protecting Carter, and he seems to be getting some rhythm doing what he does best. The defense has been amazing! Detroit's offense failed to put up a single point on the board yesterday!
The Cowboys are ranked eleventh in the power dept., but their division rivals are at 17th, 18th. and 19th, so that bodes well for the Boyz.

9. Yes, that could happen
But I still know how young this team is. I want your scenario to play out. I'm with you - I was born on September 17, 1961, the day the Cowboys won their first game in history. It's kinda like when Jim Morrison passed the car wreck with the dying indian and his spirit entered Jim's. I think the spirit of the Cowboys entered mine.

Finally being a cowboy fan is fun again.

The best thing isn't the wins. It's that it's not as painfull to watch them play.
