My attempt at a Graphic Novel--"Captain Wonderweed"
Just for fun, and because I don't have any comics of girls in bathrooms, here's one of the comics I tried to do.

It's a blatant satire/ tribute to H.R. Pufnstuf called Captain Wonderweed (obvious drug reference intended).

These were just preliminary test drawings, so word balloons, but I'll try to explain the story as best I can.

Not much here but, little boy Tommy and his magic talking mandolin Mindy are ship wreaked on Wonder Island, where they meet Captain Wonderweed and his two Sea Monkeys Little Buddy and Bigger Buddy. (That's Little Buddy there in the Second panel...)

Mindy the Mandolin is afraid that the Evil Queenie Jean will try to steal her away from Tommy...

And here the villainess herself, inside her Magic Lantern giving orders too her two henchmen Swivelsnout, The Mole, and Spike the Magic Sea Dragon to steal Mindy the Mandolin...

That's about all I have that's inked in, I got some character sketches I might put up later once I get them scaned...

So what do you think?

6. Pretty cool--
But you still might need to get a waiver from whoever still owns the Sid & Marty Krofft copyrights on the characters. I don't know for sure, but I'm wondering... I'd certainly check with an intellectual rights attorney before I put a whole lot of time into something I planned to sell.

Paramount, for instance, will go after ANYONE using Trek stuff for money...

11. HEY, understood! Love your drawing. What kind of pen
did you use for those? I use a set of MICRONs, 005 to 05, and they are the BEST for running the gamut of details! There are six pens in the pack, and they're not too expensive! Art supplies cost so much, which is why I switched my major from design to English-

*pant, pant, pant*

-and only took it up in my private time later! The subject of pens is one I could ramble on forever about, until whatever companion falls over dead from boredom... I also LOVE office supply stores. If you're resourceful enough, you can get art supplies cheaper there than anywhere. You know what paper works for me in cartooning besides posterboard? Card stock.

:D

13. I was using an old fashioned set of pen and ink nobs...
Edited on Sat Apr-16-05 02:17 PM by Longgrain
Regular India ink, and just plain sketch pad paper.

I guess that's why I switched to "pure" painting, the supplies were a lot simplier...when I could afford them.

14. That was intentional, the character's name was Queenie Jean.
Little Buddy from the first series was also based on a famous Sit-com Character from the 60s.

16. Here we finally a few from the sketch book,
Of some of the Characters...

First up are the Sea Monkeys, Little Buddy and Bigger Buddy, designed after Gilligan and the Skipper.

Here's Queenie Jean's Henchman Swivelsnout Based vaguely on the old school Hamburgler from the seventies.

And my favorite, Spike the Magic Sea Dragon...sort of a take on an old 1930s style gangster.

Phew...

They let you know the thought proccess of the final work. It's like peeking into someone's diary.

And this is a character I did for a different comic called Sim Kadalac, a beat poet, after Jack Kerouac...You might have seen him before in our other comic threads...

And please don't ask for more today, I got to get some sort of Coloring Contest ready...

22. Thank you for that, dear Longgrain!
I think people are So much more uninhibited in their sketchbooks. We think of it as "practice" no one else'll see. So we're a lot more confident about our lines and thoughts than what we produce for the public.

It's a study for the two women in my sig line painting.

More of a study of movement, dancing, the way they are running with their arms intwined...

Enjoy.

33. Yeah, it bites when you lack the sort of encouragement
that comes from success.

The proudest thing I ever did was write an entire novel--that was three years ago.

It's still sitting in a draw collecting dusts to this day. :-(

34. LOL again
I have a finished novel too! I wrote it about ten years ago, and was only able to finish it due to the circumstances back then.

I was never actually rejected because I was never able to get an agent or publisher to even read the darn thing. Every weekend I think I'm going to revamp it and try again. . . but I don't! :(

The only time I finished art projects was when I was in college and I had to finish to get the grade. *sigh* It's depressing. . .
