Does anybody else check the "alert" threads
and often wonder what in the hell caused somebody to hit alert?

Like the thread about hobbies.....it's all fun, yet there are the flames--what's up with THAT?

1. The flames appear once 50 posts have been made.
It has nothing to do with the number of alerts. :)

2. Ah, NOW I get it,
Well, I feel a little silly, but I had been wondering! Thanx :)

3. It's okay. It took me a while to understand
what kicking a thread did! :dunce:

4. LOL
It took me awhile on that one too!

And as long as we're at it, I hadn't had the foggiest clue what "LOL" meant until I asked a much younger friend from a class I was taking about two years ago.

I still scratch my head at some of the internet shorthand sometimes...B-)

5. I had the damnedest time with "n/t and "eom"
I didn't know what the hell it was and I was too afraid to ask.

7. Strange, isn't it? After all, we're all here to share information, so why
be afraid to ask?

Now, in some forums there are FAQs that cover things like that, and/or the whole forum is searchable without contributing - in instances like that, it's best to do a search first.

8. With "eom" it wasn't fear--it was the challenge!
Once my friend hipped me to LOL (which by the way was looooonnnng before I was a member of any forum) I started to suss out a bunch of the others. That damned End Of Message was like my own personal white whale, I was compelled. At some point you have to accept reality though!

And I'm not too ashamed to ask. So, anyone, what does "eom" mean?

12. End of Message.
It should always be in the Subject, never the body--it's a warning that means 'there's no body message, so don't click on here and be disappointed.' Putting it in the body is useless.

23. Someone posted this link
http://www.romulus2.com/articles/guides/shorthand/shorthand.shtml

It gives a lot of the internet shorthand.

Some have taken me a while to figure out too...and some I just figure I'll never know.

18. n/t means No Text
LIHOP is Let it Happen on Purpose (re 9/11) and kicking a thread just moves it to the top the screen so people don't forget about it.

Sorry it took so long to respond--I hadn't seen this thread come back up! :hi:

16. Here is a question maybe you can answer
What is the symbolism behind the blue paper clip?

17. There was a decent sized thread about it before the election
in WWII the occupied Norwegians wore blue paper clips on their lapels to symbolize there resistance to the Nazis. I can't remember offhand if they were protesting ther homegrown traitor Quisling--or if they waited until the Germans had to take over directly to bust out the paperclips.

I just like the symbolism of the quiet unrelenting protest.

19. Finally
I asked once or twice before, but nobody answered. I joined DU after the election so I missed that thread, but back in November, there were references to it every once in a while, but when I asked what it meant, the thread would just die.

I thought you were around longer than I...apparently I just edged you out (started in October)

21. I went through a serious case of post-election depression
And DU was the only place that cheered me up, which is why I accumulated so many posts in such a short time.

22. I think you had a lot of company in that
before the election I was a total GD DUer but I had to run to the lounge to cheer up. It took a month or two to work mysef up to debate...I just wanted light banter for a while.

24. Thanks so much for responding
but what is n/t? I found DU after the elections. I needed it during, to tell the truth. I just had my son build me this computer. I've been paying for the on-line hook up for years without ever going to a chat room. My 456 posts are the total number of times i ever posted. All I ever did was play solitaire. I started getting close to 5,000 consistently and figured I'd better move on. I heard about DU on some Right-winger talk radio show. I've still never started a thread. What a dork, huh.
