Just got back from Asheville, NC!
Spent the day in Asheville. The new I-26 is complete from Johnson City, TN to Asheville, NC. We had no idea what a treasure we had just over the mountain. A liberal oasis in a desert full of Freepers! We were so pleased to find bookstores with Michael Moore and Al Franken proudly out front, hemp stores, hiking and biking outlets, wonderful restaurants and anti-Bush propaganda all over downtown!

We're going back on October 30 to see Jim Hightower speak! Our new home away from home....just 45 minutes away from our farm in Elizabethton, TN....hooray!

1. Thanks for the heads up on Hightower!
My 80% home now is in the mountains about 45 miles SW of Asheville. Where will Hightower be in Asheville?

Hope to see you there! I really was impressed with Asheville. I hope the new interstate helps the progressive spirit spread west over the Appalachians into my little corner of Tennessee.

2. Ashville is a great town.
Truly, North Carolina is a beautiful state full of great people. How on earth they keep sending people like Helms and Dole to the Senate I dont know, of course they are correct half the time, they did send Edwards to the Senate and he is a good one.

7. I was really impressed with Edwards on Hardball the other night.
I think he would beat Bush with all things being equal. I can't understand why he doesn't get more support.

3. It must have changed
I used to live in Spartanburg, SC and loved to drive up to Asheville. A very nice town in a beautiful location but I sure don't remember it being a seat of liberalism. Maybe twenty years has made a difference. It seems like all the rest of the south has moved farther in the other direction over those years.

4. I'll take a Beacon chili cheeseburger
Asheville is now a tourist destination. At least for Spartanburg rednecks. Go Vikings.

8. 20 years have made a big difference
I now own a mountain place near Rosman,NC. It is a log cabin/home in the wilds.

My gay brother in Atlanta says many of his friends are moving to Asheville, especially the Lesbians. "Ten-thousand Lesbians can't be wrong" is the motto in my brother's (a radioligist M.D.) circle.

My wife and I are agonizing about moving our other residence from Dallas to a loft or condo in Asheville or Greenville, SC. Actually, downtown Greenville has become vibrant. Great restaurants, great shops, and great lofts and condos. However, for me Greenvile sports too many in-laws, very repressive politics, and the Bob Jones University (Bo-Jo's). On the other hand, Greenville offers many more non-stops on the RJs (50-pax jets of American, USAirways, and Delta) to the places she works every week (Chicago, Dallas, NYC, etc).

MS/DR DemoTex sez Greenville. DemoTex sez Ashville. Since I got my mountain house exactly where I wanted it (extremely isolated - way back a gravel mountain road in the "sticks"), with permission to live there more-or-less full-time with the two dogs, I guess we will get a condo or very small house in Greenville, SC (90 min drive). No big deal.
