Another Boston event
How many times have you observed Squeech shooting his virtual mouth off on some poor defenseless music thread, and said to yourself, "What a poseur! Yeah, I'd like to hear *him* rock out, that fatuous dickweed!"

Well, NOW YOU CAN! The band for which I play bass, Tim Mungenast and his Pre-Existing Conditions, will be performing in this unabashedly retro-psychedelic event in Somerville, on an actual weekend! So come and see us! Here's the info from Chairman Tim's e-mail:

LONG-RANGE GIG NOTICE: Saturday April 30 at 8:00 p.m., the multimedia psych extravaganza EXPLODING PLASTIC INCREDIBLE will take place at the Sky Bar, 518 Somerville Ave, Somerville, MA. There will be go-go dancers, a belly dancer, sitar between sets, a light show, and FOUR GREAT ACTS: the bizarre spoken-word stylings of Astro Al, followed by the goatar-driven psych of Tim Mungenast and His Preexisting Conditions, then the dark, brooding, mystic instrumentals of Magonia, and headlining the show will be avant-jam heroes Meathawk and the Meathawks.
A robust attendance will be especially important. SAVE THE DATE; you won't want to miss this one!

1. Sky Bar!
Across from where I lived a few years ago.

The carpet will melt your face off. Believe me.

2. I couldn't agree more
Actually I endeavor never to let *any* barroom floor come in contact with my face.

But have you seen Sky Bar since they remodeled last summer? They got the stage from out of the corner and moved it to the wall across from the bar, greatly improving sight lines. They seem to have done some work on the PA too, or maybe it's just that the same revamping helped the acoustics as much as the visuals. The ambiguity as to whether the room was gonna be a dive or a rock club appears to have been settled in favor of the latter, and that's a Good Thing.

4. The place used to be a total shithole
No bands, dive bar dump with a cocaine problem. There were these six old barflies who were always, always at the rail. The owner closed it down for most of a year to refurbrish it and turn it into Sky Bar.

On opening night, those same six old barflies were right back at the rail.

5. Yeah, but
we played enough weird gigs there that they eventually oozed back into their nacre-encrusted caves.

Maybe the UV in the day-glo lighting sterilized 'em, like so many bowling shoes...

Did I mention they took out the pool table too, thereby disrupting the traditional townie barfly ecosystem?

6. Yeah
It was a fundamentally different place after the remodeling. The first time I went in, I thought I'd stumbled onto the set of Miami Vice. ;)

7. Oh shoot
I've a gig in New Haven then. Otherwise I'd definitely go, especially for those "go-go dancers." Didn't even know they still existed. In cages with white boots and big bouffants no doubt.

Too funny.

Hope it goes swimmingly.

8. Late news
We're actually not allowed to have the go-go dancers; apparently there's some sort of zoning or licensing law that Sky Bar's owners informed us in no uncertain terms that we mustn't violate.

I have no idea where we'd get the cages either. I do know where to get the bouffants: Garment District, on Broadway in Cambridge.

Thanks for the good wishes, though! :hi:
