3. I quit the hardest way possible about 6 months ago.
Edited on Wed Apr-13-05 07:38 AM by BlueJazz
I kept a pack of smokes in the car, house and in my Sax case.
I told myself in a rather nasty way:
"They're right there, fucker..you want to die of lung cancer?..You want to shorten your life?...you want to keep spending 1500 dollars a year?...you like non-white teeth?...no energy? Go ahead and light one up, you weak son-of-a-bitch... let the fuckers take control of your life".

I got through the first week and found that I could resist anything after that!!

Damn..I feel SO much better...

5. My grandmothers friend did something similiar
she kept a pack in her purse at all times.. She said if she had a pack with her she was less likely to want to smoke. By the time she really craved a cigarette the pack was a few months old and she realized they probably tasted horrible and stale. Shes been smoke free for over 15 years now.

What sax do you play? I played tenor and alto.. still have my tenor :)

(I got a Gregory mouthpiece...used by the late, great Paul Desmond and fell in love with the Alto) :)

They put a hot wire to my head

Model citizen in every way

If you get the urge to smoke, drink water.

I never did, but I heard it works.

I quit 2 1/2 years ago. The patch will give you awesome dreams.

7. congratualations and best of luck....

I quit over 20 years ago, also after multiple tries. It seemed that the last time just "took." My resolve somehow became stronger than it had been during previous attempts. After about a year or so I couldn't imagine ever smoking cigarettes again. For the last 10 years my (now ex-) wife smoked 1-2 packs a day, but despite being around all that smoking, I never had the slightest desire to start smoking again.

I think the key for me was not only having a strong desire to quit, but also congratulating myself everyday I went without smoking for the first month or two-- giving myself a real feeling of personal accomplishment from keeping my resolve firm.

10. More hanging-in-there vibes from me.
You can do it. I'm sure it's a bitch, but it IS doable and worth doing.

Take that with the necessary amount of salt from a person who was only up to a pack a day after two years and had MASSIVE amounts of psych drugs in her system to blunt the withdrawals at the time she quit.

I believe in you.

18. Best of luck!
It will get worse before it gets better. Then it will slowly get better and better and better until you won't believe that you used to poison yourself like that. I have to list quitting cigarettes as one of the best things I have ever done for myself. Don't give up, no matter how hard it gets, the end results are so worth the effort.

One more thing to keep in mind. As a guy who failed numerous times before finally succeeding, having a smoke will NOT make you feel better in the way that your nicotine-starved brain tries to make you think that it will. Do some push-ups, have sex, go for a walk, something, to take your mind off of your craving and it will pass. After a time, they will lessen until they just don't matter anymore.

Good luck, if I can do it, so can you. It's worth it.

I was up to 3 packs of Kools a day, and came from a long line of smokers. Another motivation for me was to break that line for my kids.

30. Good motivation
I remember sitting on my aunt's lap at the kitchen table, choking, as a kid! There was Mom,Gramma,Grandpa and my aunt, smoking like chimneys! My aunt didn't come over too often,so I'd tough it out, just to be near her.Fast forward 33 years, she has emphysema and still smokes 2 packs of pall malls a day.Gramma died of lung cancer in '78.Grandpa quit smoking in '92 after his bypass, but he died in '02.

33. Thank You and yes
I chose to go with an anti-depressant (Wellbutrin - same stuff as Zyban) along with the Nicotrol Inhaler, which satisfied alot of the smoking rituals as well as the Nicotine withdrawal. Best of luck to you. :)

31. you rock!
i quit about two years ago. it's a f-ing bitch, but you can do it! each day is a battle but it does get easier with each non-smoking day under your belt.

i started dating a non-smoker and that's what did it for me. i broke down a few times here and there, but i am smoke free and marrying the guy who is adding years of joy to my life in more ways than one.

keep up the good fight!
