Poll question: Did you go to your HS prom?
People are amazed that I did not go (of course, if they saw me then, they would probably understand).

And I saw the prom prices thread, so it begs the question:

Did you go? (to any of your school's proms?)

5. Nope.
Went to dinner and a comedy club with friends instead. And, at the comedy club, we saw people from prom, in their tuxes and shiny/puffy dresses (it was 1993). It was hot and smoky in the club. We were a lot more comfortable.

19. Yes, because it was quite a different world. The sense of community was
so strong that one wouldn't simply NOT act on one's own in this way. For good or bad, kids in my school did what was expected of them, or were lost from the community. And going to the prom was one of those things that everyone just did.

So we've gained things and lost things by becoming more individualistic and independent, I think.

I remember kids bringing guns to school when I was in high school. It was not a problem, because it just meant they were going hunting after school. That sounds so far-fetched now, but it wasn't really all that long ago.

65. Pretty much everyone went at my school too
Perhaps with a couple of missing, but less missing than would miss on a typical day of school. The dance itself was free if you were a junior or senior student attending the school. If your date was not a junior or senior attending that school, the cost for your date was $10. Most of the cost for prom was raised through consession stand sales at various sporting events. While some girls bought expensive dresses, just as many bought simpler department store dresses, which could be bought under $50. Very few arrived in a limo and if they did it was in conjunction with a large group.
Graduating classes averaged around 60. If you did not go, you were letting everyone down: half of the junior class that worked decorating the hall and planning it, the concession stand workers, everyone else in your class, your school, and your community. Everyone knew if you were there or not and it wasn't good to not be there. There were no excuses.
I went to three high school proms put on by my school, junior and senior and my sophomore year when I was dating a senior.

8. I had tickets to my prom
I was going to go with one of the most popular guys at the school (he was not a jock type popular - more a bad boy type popular). Not as a date date - he was a good friend.

I had a dress and we had tickets - we were essentially going because no one would expect either of us to be there and we thought it would be a bit of a hoot but at the last minute we found out about a huge wild party at another friend's place so we went to that instead. It was well worth it and I wasn't even too concerned about the fifty bucks that I wasted on my ticket (the dress I'd already had).

9. We don't really have proms in BC
We did have a Grad Dance. (It's after the Grad ceremony.) I didn't go. Dancing was bad when I was a teenager.

I went on a road trip with some friends.

We left at 2:00 am after the Grad Banquet. Went to Lake Louise, and hiked up to the summit. Ate breakfast on top of the mountain. Drove to Calgary had a picnic and went to the Wave Pool, the Zoo, and went shopping. After that we drove to Banff and had a fabulous dinner. Went home. It was a pretty fun, but packed 24 hours.

13. I made it to the last half hour, after one of the worst days of my life!
I started out in DC, on a field trip. Our flight was supposed to get back to Gulfport in the afternoon, where I was supposed to shower, put on my white tux, and drive my date in my newly repaired 72 Ford Maverick (gold, four door, 302 engine).

The flight got delayed because of the same icing problem that had a couple of weeks earlier caused the same type plane to crash into a bridge and an icy river in DC. Eventually the flight got cancelled, and our entire group-- all of whom were trying to return for prom-- were shifted onto a plane to Atlanta--I remember the pilot announcing "We are now departing on our non-stop flight to Miami, with a brief stop in Atlanta-- where we finally caught a flight to Gulfport. My parents picked me up around 8, I went home, showered, put on my white tux, picked up my patient date, and drove down Highway 49 to Highway 90, then turned left towards the Colliseum several miles away. About that time my Overheated light came on on the dashboard.

I pulled over, popped the hood, loosened the radiator cap then jumped out of the way of the steaming gieser. Remember, I'm wearing a white tux. People are laughing as they pass on the highway. As the steam cleared, I found the problem-- my father had replaced the water pump, but had not put the fan belt back on. He still does crap like that, btw.

I refilled the radiator with cool water in Jones Park, then drove the rest of the way to the prom, where my date flaunted me to the woman she had beat out, who had resorted to going with another woman who also had wanted me to ask her. After half an hour, the prom ended, and I limped back home, chewed out my father, then... well, you know what you do after proms.

I got laid. But since I had been sleeping with my date for almost a year by this point, and since I later married her and have spent almost 19 years in hell, I kind of wish she had dumped me over the whole thing!

Pretty normal prom night in Mississippi, all in all. One of my friends got into a high speed drunken chase with a cop. He had more fun. He probably got laid that night, too, if you know what I mean...

14. I'm A Yes
In junior year, i had a girlfriend and we went. In senior year, i didn't actually go to the school but they wouldn't let me graduate early. (I took college classes at a local university all year.) But, i went with a friend from another school who i hadn't seen since we were in 6th grade. She didn't have a boyfriend, i didn't have a girlfriend. So, i asked her if she wanted to go. We went to her school's prom and mine on the same night, then met mutual friends for dinner after.

Fun for both of us. No big thing. Just a fun weekend.

I would have liked to, but sadly my HS girlfriend at the time (sherri richardson) wound up getting pregnant, and not by me. Turns out she was two-timing me and we broke up a few weeks before the senior prom.

I would have liked to have gone but the break up was more drama than a 17 year old could handle, so I didn't go.

24. Yes (twice)
My sophomore year went w/my senior boyfriend - we had a fancy dinner and desert  and made it to prom late.

My senior year I went with my boyfriend's (different boyfriend) best friend (I broke up w/my boyfriend and we got back together but not before he asked another girl to prom - being honorable he kept his date) We had a blast and my boyfriend and I danced a couple of dances together. (bet the girl didn't have much fun) My folks hosted a breakfast for all of us afterwords and it was fun - we stayed up until 5:00 A.M. and then some of us had to get a couple of hours shut-eye cuz @ 7:00 A.M. we had to be at church for our Catholic Confirmation (with the Bishop of our Diocese!). Pretty neat memories!

26. Nope, it was kind of a bad time in my life.
I was feeling pretty down about myself and I didn't really want to go out strutting my stuff. I found out from a friend that a girl I was friends with was thinking of asking me towards the end. I told my friend to tell that girl to forget about it. That's how depressed I was. I turned things around that summer, and it's a lot better now.

These days I wish I could have been in the position to attend, but I don't regret the decision I made. If I had gone, I'm sure I would have found a way to have a horrible time.

33. Wouldn't have been caught dead.
Prom/school dances were one of those things that "other people" did, for whom I had such contempt because I totally couldn't relate to their mindset. I actually was asked once, which is surprising in itself, as I was such a solitary life-form, but I turned the guy down. Tried to be nice about it (I hope), but I honestly had better things to do with my time.

went to a small private school in new york, so instead of dressing up the gym for a dance the whole class booked onto a "cruise to no-where" that left from the city for a night out beyond the international limit. no drinking age and gambling was legal. loads of fun except for the rough seas that night . . .

51. I went two years
We only had a senior prom, but I went when I was a junior.

My junior year, I already had a dress so I didn't need to buy one. We did go in a limo, but that was like $50. And the person I went with bought my after-prom ticket ($20). I bought the shirts we wore to afterprom ($50). Oh and I paid for my ticket to the prom $50. All in all I got off cheap.

My senior year, my date paid for my prom ticket. I wore my bridesmaid dress from my brother's wedding (that he bought for me). I bought the after-prom shirt ($50) and after-prom tickets ($40). And we took his mom's car.

So, I think I got off cheap for both years. Unlike some girls that I knew that spent a ton of money on their dress. And really there's nothing special about a limo.

... it was an all-female high-achievers high school in NYC. It was 1971, and we called off the prom because we could not, in good conscience, party down at a prom while our soliders were dying in an unjust war.

If only we could see some of this same kind of conscience these days...

63. I did--both junior and senior
but I only had a girlfriend for junior prom. Senior prom was, though, more fun.

64. Yes.
Both junior and senior proms. And I am still friends with the guys to this day, although I didn't marry either one of them.

66. Yeah
Didn't know for sure I was going to get to go to my junior one until about ten minutes before it started when the girl I had asked but hadn't given me a definite answer (because of her creepy ex-boyfriend who was still in the picture) showed up at my door with her friends! I showed up in jeans and a big green t-shirt (with my longish hair, everyone kept calling me a "Shaggy"). I stuck out like a sore thumb but my soon-to-be girlfriend and I had a blast.

Senior prom we went the formal route and did all the junk you're "supposed" to do and it wasn't nearly as fun. Go figure...

67. My mother forced me to go
Worst night of my life. My boyfriend's wallet was stolen, the place it was held had crappy food (my father's a chef, so I was doubly insulted), the limo driver refused to drive us to the beach with the rest of the class. The only good thing was that my sister dyed and re-tailored my dress, which was only $100.

68. Didn't go for several reasons.
One, I very much doubt anyone would go with me.

Two, I still would rather have done what I did. I went to see The Mighty Mighty Bosstones three nights in a row at the Bowery Ballroom. Those were three incredible shows I will never forget.

Three, I didn't drink at the time so the after parties did not appeal to me.

My mother still tells me, four years later, I will regret not going. Four years later I have little contact with anyone from high school and only think about it when college friends talk about it or when responding to threads as I am here.

73. Nope, but I wanted to. :(
However, being a closeted gay guy that didn't work out well. I wasn't interested in going with just anyone. I wanted to go with a date. Sadly that wasn't feasible so I didn't go, and even if I was openly gay I'll never forget...

There was a girl in my math class who didn't have a date for the prom, so she wanted to show up with one of her friends (who was a girl) who also didn't have a date. The principle told them that they couldn't because of "how it might look". She told the teacher and the class about it and how disappointed she was. I'll never forget that. It was the first time in my life that I honestly can say I felt discriminated against for being gay. (Name calling was one thing, but the realization that I was denied certain things that everyone else got to do was something else entirely.)

77. I went to both my junior prom and my senior prom.
My senior prom experience was a much better one - my date actually LEFT ME at the junior prom and I had to ride home with friends.

When I went to the prom my senior year, I went with a great guy, someone I'd been dating casually most of my senior year (he'd graduated a year ahead of me). We had a lot of fun.

79. You will never, ever believe what the prom theme was, either.
My high school's teams were named the Hawks. I graduated in 1979.

The theme for our prom, and the theme song was....

Wait for it...

"Free Bird", Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I kid you not.

Julie*

*Went to the prom with the valedictorian, smartest guy in the class but didn't have a drivers' license. His sister chauffered us. I wore a borrowed Gunne Sax dress (remember those, ladies?) We had a great time. I still smile whenever I hear "Just The Way You Are," it was the first slow dance of my senior prom.

81. Yup, I went, even asked the guy!
My classmates were convinced my parents would not let me go. After all, I had never ever been out alone with a guy at the ripe old age of 18. Since I was somewhat tomboyish, and not one to be outwardly interested in guys, I had to go just to prove my friends wrong.

So I bewailed my predicament to a classmate, who set me up with this guy...so I had to ask him. Then found out later the classmate was dating the same guy...AARGh. The guy and I went out anyway. The fun part was watching the astonishment...either I was finally seen wearing a dress and/or the fact my parents let me out alone with a guy!

83. I went to 4 proms
I enjoyed all of them.

When I was a sophomore I went to prom with senior boyfriend at our school. That same year, about 2 weeks later, I went to prom with a senior friend from a different school.

When I was a junior I went to prom with senior boyfriend.

When I was a senior I went to my prom with the same boyfriend from the year before.
