I was a drunken idiot last night
I'm making an effort to be more social and meet people. So, last night i went to eat at a bar and ended up getting obliterated. I'm really embarrased about how drunk I got. Can I ever go back to that place or should I just go back to spending my weekend nights alone watching t.v.?

1. I got drunk last month on my birthday at the little bar my friends and I
go to. I am almost always the DD so I seldom have more than one drink. I just went back for the first time last night.

I would avoid that bar for a little while... but you can still go other places. And, of course, there is no reason to avoid even that bar. I am sure the bartenders have seen worse.... and from people who do it everyday not just occassionally. :)

Just don't drive.... get a cab

3. I walked home.
That was the only smart decision I made.

2. Me too, a little.
I never left home, we had people over for dinner, which was great...

But afterwards, I may have had a bit too much wine. Is a bottle and a half too much?

Anyway, I didn't really make a fool of myself, and I managed to drag myself to the gym this morning where I spent most of my time in the steam room, but I have one of those dull wine headaches today.

And I've been so good recently. Oh well.

4. BAH! Drunken idiot = fun to hang out with
Or at least that's what I end up trying to explain to everyone at around 11:30 on weekend nights.

13. I feel your pain...

I too find it hard to balance socializing with drinking. I want to be around people but that usually means being at a bar, and that means alcohol aplenty. I've been known to drink too much.

I try to fill my DAYS with things to do, including socializing, so that my nights are usually spent reading or watching movies. Best of both worlds....still get to socialize without being in a setting that's conducive to drinking. Just my two cents.

19. I'll work on that.
I'm going to play tennis with a friend, so I guess that's a good start.

5. Depends.......
If it's a bar, i'm sure they've seen many many people get obliterated before.......however, if you're an "obnoxious, belligerant" drunk, or if you wound up throwing up all over the bar, it may be a different story.. :)

6. Hopefully everyone else was as drunk as you.
Go back and if need be apologize. Explain that you don't get out much. How bad was it? Did you tear the place up, or insult 90% of the clientele?

12. I don't think I did anything bad.
I actually bought a round of drinks for the bar. I'm just ashamed to let people see me out of control.

The other half can bite the big one.:toast: Your just finding your way, good luck.

20. Limit yourself, and make the decision BEFORE you enter
...that or any establishment. One drink per hour. If you drink beer, alternate between alcohol and non alcohol beer. If you go for mixed drinks, one mixed drink, then a soft drink, or two, or three. After an hour has gone by, have another drink if you want one.

In any event, taxi, bum a ride, or ride those Nikes you got on at closing time.

Unless you characteristically get wasted like that all the time, what was happening was an acute case of shyness, I suspect....perhaps aggravated by the need to be "doing" something, and having a drink to sip on gives one something to do.

23. That's a great idea.
I know I drink because I'm nervous and need something to do--so if I mix in water and cokes it'll give me something to do with my nervous energy.

27. I spent many, many years on the "cocktail circuit"
It was part of my job, actually, and I just couldn't handle the boozing that went on at those events. It was required that I be both social and also keep my wits about me. I found that method works well, and as a side benefit I was also able to get good info out of people who had overindulged (heh, heh--gotta do whatcha gotta do). Also, if you are drinking, say, a glass of sparkling water with a twist of lime, for all anyone knows you are slamming down a vodka and 7-Up....and that was handy, too, because some people, when they drink, DEMAND that you drink as well.

When I would be at these events, and knew the bartender well, I'd be able to say "Give me the USUAL" and here would come my non-drink drink, complete with garnish. Let me off the hook, no one the wiser! Some folks thought I had quite the capacity...!

However, haha, my sober self spends much time covering the tracks and fixing the problems my drunk self causes...but it's damn worth it!

11. After years of embarrassing stuporous drunken acts ....
I stopped 'getting drunk' at age 23 .... I limited my drinking to TWO drinks and only two drinks ....

That was 25 years ago ....

I did once, since then, get somewhat tipsy .. but I was at home, and just made a beeline for the bed .. and slept it off ...

My kids have NEVER seen me drunk ... ever .... I wish I could say the same about my own dad ....

17. Naaa...happens to the best of us every now and again
Just make light of it and don't do it again for a while!

You can always say something to the effect of "no two ways about that...that's just embarrassing!" Then, maybe toss in an apology to whomever may have witnessed the debacle.

Caution: A repeat performance anytime in the near future at the same place will result in a much different reaction. In that case, you will become "that guy" in people's minds.

Lots of fluids and something homestyle, fried, or mexican highly recommended for dinner.

Good luck!

24. The ironic thing...
When I was walking in a drunk was being escorted out and I said to myself--at least I'll never end up like that guy. Cut to three hours later--me wobbling out the same door.

25. I STILL have a hangover
I believe the proper term is "I'm recovering".

That's all they do here in Dallas - shop and drink until the sun comes up. I feel like someone pushed me out of the car last night in traffic, and then proceeded to let a studen driver parallel park on me. As my cooling corpse was laying in the road, a dog came along and shit in my mouth.

I do not feel very pretty at the moment.

I just can't keep up with my lush friends - they're insane. Oh I hurt.

The dog shitting in your mouth is a great image.

I drank wheat beer with lemon. I'll never eat another lemon in my life.,

29. If you can remember ...
If you can remember being a drunken idiot, you probably weren't a drunken idiot. However, if you learned that you were a drunken idiot from others, then you can only return to the bar if you practice your sheepish grin.

30. You have my admiration. You identified a problem,
and are trying to fix it by facing it. I've been shy all my life, but learned to cover it well. Only the people who know me well see it. I don't think it ever goes away, but you can learn to make friends, good friends, and not be lonely. You showed courage. Just take it slow, and be cautious about who you invest your trust in. The users of the world have fine tuned radar for needy people.

31. What did you do that would make you embarrassed?
If you are having trouble keeping sober while at the bar, perhaps on those nights where you are alone you should practice your drinking so you won't embarrass yourself at the bar.
