When was the last time anyone checked your signature on a credit card?
I guess the same question could be posed for a debit card though the pin number thing covers most of that but anyone could use a friend or roommates debit card.
I have used two different credit cards recently (Visa and MC) and in the three instances of using them not one person even looked at the back let alone ask to see an ID.
A few years ago between jobs I picked up some hours at a corner neighborhood store. I always at least checked the signatures on the card and on the receipt. On more than one occasion no signature was present-they had written on the back of the card "Ask to see ID" which is pretty smart. Maybe I was just too diligent at my job...but then I know the CORRECT way to give change (coins THEN the bills and not stacked together causing the recipient to put down their wallet and perform a balancing act) so may I was working below my pay grade.
Anyone? Anyone noticed a cashier actually checking to see if the signatures are even close?
3. I write ask to see ID on my cards yet most cashiers still don't
When I worked in retail one of my regular customers told me that her father was a cop and he use to write see ID on the back of his credit cards. Then he'd let her go shopping with them. Most people never checked so at the end of the month he'd contest all the charges she'd make because the stores never checked.
Is now nearly universal in the U.K., a computer does all of the checking.
I once got a comment about the look of my signature (along the lines of 'what does that look like?') but it wasn't checked with the back of the card. Once my mother realised after using her card for a couple of months that she hadn't even signed it (no comments from cashiers).
6. I always thought the signature on the back of the card
gave the person who stole your card something to practice by. But you're right, they don't check. Last year over $1,000 was charged onto my Visa card . Oh well, their loss.
