Dammit! How do you get a foreign object out of your eye?

I've had something in my eye for hours now, and I can't dislodge the damned thing. I've flooded my eye with Visine, have been examining it under a bright light to see if I can locate the object, deliberately teared up, and I CAN'T GET RID OF IT. It's driving me batshit!

1. It's possible that there is nothing in your eye now, but that you've

irritated it to such an extent that it feels like it. That's happened to me many times, I have very sensitive eyes. My suggestion... flush with water, take some benydryl to reduce the inflammation and put a cool, damp cloth over your eyes for a few minutes.

2. Hate to say it,

but things can get embedded in your eye. I've had it happen. If you really can't flush it out by tomorrow, I recommend a trip to the doctor.

3. IF you cannot go to an Urgent Care clinic ....

... where a nurse or doctor can use a VERY high powered black light and a magnifier to inspect your eye .... then perhaps you have a flashlight, a magnifying glass, and a good friend with a steady hand to take a look ? ....

I HIGHLY recommend a clinic visit ....

4. Well...

A true American would NEVER let any foreign object influence his or her eye! Only AMERICAN objects, and those approved of by a MAJORITY of good, godly aMURRIcans should be allowed in your eye, and you should cry TEARS OF JOY to host such!

On the other hand, you could get an egg cup (or equivalent), put in some distilled water, put it over your eye, tilt your head up and rinse the water around till you get rid of the object...your choice.

5. Take a long nap.

If you have tried flushing with saline solution and find no relief, take a long nap.

Thats what Grandma always had us do and fortunately it worked every time.

6. I'm assuming you don't have a good old fashion eye-wash glass

but do you have a shot glass?

If so, fill half full with lukewarm tap water(distilled water if you have it). Place rim of glass over eye, with your head tilted forward. Make sure it's secure. Now bring your head up and back, open your eye and blink. Repeat if necessary. This should help rinse the eye and dislodge the offending particle.

On Edit: if it does not work, I'd seek medical help. Better safe than sorry. Don't rub, pull, or stretch the eye area, as it will only make matters worse.

Honestly though, sometimes if I've been messing with my eye a lot to get something out, my eyelid swells up just so that an eyelash is touching my eye, even after the offending object is removed.

You may have something like that going on.

13. Well if it's still bothering you...

Method 1: With your thumb and index finger, drag your upper eylid over your lower eyelid. Repeat. Repeat again. And again.

Method 2: Get a reliable friend to help you. Have them take a clean handkerchief or (maybe better) Kleenex, open it, fold it to make a point, then, with middle finger pull down the lower eyelid, and dab with the point of said Kleenex on anything that looks like it might be causing the discomfort. You can do this yourself.

Method 3: Go to the emergency room.

14. You may have scratched your cornea.

Or caused an ulceration, if you have rubbed at it. If it doesn't go away soon, seek professional assistance. You don't want to mess around with your eyesight.

15. Agreed. I've had a corneal abrasion and it's no fun. If it doesn't clear

by morning, go to the ER or an urgent care, have them get a look at it.
