Poll question: What Do You Call Your Grandmother and Grandfather? Or...
... what do your grandchildren call you?

The variations in our family are confusing. The list includes: Mom-ma, Granny, Mamma-Nell, Daddy-bub, Grampa, Granddaddy, Grammy, Moe-ma, and Mee-ma.

1. Other.
"Dead". All but one died before I was born. The one I knew I called "Grandma". No grandchildren.

2. Depends on which one...
you're talking about.

My paternal grandmother is Granny. Her 2nd husband (she married him before I was born) was Grampa.

My paternal grandfather was Papaw and his 2nd wife was Mamaw.

My maternal grandfather died when my momma was 17 so I never met him.

My maternal grandmother is Nanna. She's also Granny Grace (that's her first name) or Granny Grunt - that's how my brother and I messed up her name when we were little bitty and she thought it was funny.

My parents are grandparents now. My "niece" (best friend's daughter) calls them Nanna and Poppy or Papaw. My nephew (little brother's son) calls them Papaw and Nanna-honey. :-)

5. I Forgot Two: "Big-Daddy" and "Big-Mamma"
(It always reminds me of 'Cat on a Hot Tin Roof' whenever I hear that.)

6. Grammy and Grampy (paternal) are living.
Nana and Papa (maternal) are gone.

My parents probably want to be Grandma and Grampa if they become grandparents.

7. Mine are dead, too
My maternal g'parents were Grammy and Pa.

My paternal g'father was Grampy. My g'mother died when my dad was a teen.

My parents are/were Grammy and Grampy to their grandchildren.

Shortly after I got married my MIL sent me a birthday card and signed it "When the children come you can call me Grammy." Almost 30 years later she's still waiting for those grandchildren. :)

9. deceased
;-)
couldn't resist
I called them Granny & Grampaw. I guess it was supposed to be "grandpa", but it came out Grampaw.
Grandson Jack is only 15 months old and just starting to talk.
He hasn't named us yet but I refuse to be a PooPaw or anything ridiculous.
Maybe I'll just have him call me "Your Airmanship".

11. Mine are all gone, sadly
I was never close to my maternal grandparents. My mom's dad died well before I was born, and her step-dad was always just "Robert." My maternal g-mother was "Mamaw," but I just usually referred to her as "that bitch in Arkansas." This was the meanest woman alive, no kidding. One of the last times I saw her, she made Robert drive her from Arkansas to Austin, looking for my uncle (who was hiding in a vet hospital, trying to get off drugs). I was in 4th grade. My mother promised my uncle she would keep his location secret. Mamaw got so mad she beat the crap out of my mother right there in front of me and my little sister. Terrifying. She died a couple of years ago but I didn't bother going to the funeral.

Now, my paternal grandparents are another story altogether. Grandma Nell. I miss her terribly. She died in 1988 of pancreatic cancer, but was almost 80. She was a tremendous woman, six feet tall, fabulous cook, with a huge heart. Everyone was family. My grandfather, Papa David, died when I was 3. Grandma Nell did remarry a wonderful, wonderful sweet man who loved her dearly. He was Papa Stanley. They were together for many years. My great-grandmother, Grandma Bush (no relation, so stop saying that), lived to be 103 and died of natural causes. My grandmother has siblings still living who are in their 80s and 90s. Good genes, I guess!

My parents are grandparents now, and one of my older sisters is even a grandmother, which is freaky! My mom is Nana. My dad has been alternately Pop-Pop, for the older grandkids (now in their 20s), and Grandpa for my daughter (12) and my nephew (6).

Whew! What a brain dump! Did anyone make it all the way through that??
