I Found THE BEST PIZZA IN NYC LAST NIGHT!!!!!!!!!
Edited on Fri Apr-08-05 12:30 PM by Beetwasher
I discovered this gem of a place that, unfortunately, is probably WAAAY out of the way for most people. It's in Red Hook, Brooklyn and it's called the Liberty Ale House.

We went to check out and play at their open mic night (they also have pretty nice set up for that too!) and it's a bar that's pretty much in the middle of nowhere amongst all these warehouses, but I'll be damned! They've got the best friggin' pizza (and the rest of the food is damn good too!) I've just about ever had. They also have some sensational microbrews too (it's also a brewery!)! You gotta love it when you stumble over something like this that is just totally unexpected.

1. i live in texas, it really sucks i wish i could visit NY and stuff...
i'm 22 years old, i'd love to travel but i've got no money... i know that most people who travel to different cities tend to feel more "Fulfilled" as a person.

i'd love to go to NY, eat at white castle, The Dumping Man, etc... i hope one day i can.

Thanks for this post!!

2. White Castle? The Dumping Man?
What the heck is the Dumping Man? If you ever do make it to NY, I would suggest foregoing the White Castle and any place named The Dumping Man...NY has the best food in the world, why the heck would you waste your time at White Castle, unless of course you are joking?

23. Welcome to DU
Hope you can make it to NYC in the near future!

In my experience the "best pizza in the world" has always been:
1) when I was REALLY hungry
2) preceeded by a pitcher of beer
and 3) shared with about 4 or more friends on long benches in a rowdy place

Sounds like Red Hook fits that description. :-)

24. For a second there, I thought NYC had its own version of Burning Man
"Dumping Man", indeed! They could have it out at Fresh Kills now that it's no longer an active landfill (although a few ceremonial dump truck loads would only add to the ambiance :-) )

You'd be much better off eating dumplings in NYC Chinatown.

6. Do It!
You will not be dissapointed. It's a thin crust, brick oven type of pizza. I also recommend their Amber Ale.

5. You're kidding me!
I live down in Red Hook, probably about 3 or 4 blocks from the Liberty Ale House.

I've never set foot in the place. It always looks kind of deserted when I've gone past it.

I'll have to check out their pizza.

Seriously, I was blown away...It's a thin, crispy crust, brick oven type...Their mid eastern flatbread is really good too! I recommend their Amber Ale to go with it! I can't wait to go back!

11. Have you been to Di Fara in Midwood?
I've had three different people tell me in the last couple of weeks that it is far and away the best pizza in NYC.

I can't wait to check it out, but it's a little far away. I'll have to wait for a good weekend.

My faves (of the ones I've had) are Grimaldi's and Brick Oven Gallery (Williamsburg).

I may have to go to Grimaldi's this Sunday....yummmm...

16. Not For A Long Time
Di Fara's is good though! I'd have to have it again to compare...But if I remember correctly (I might be mixing it up w/ somewhere else), Di Fara's is your typical, traditional type of pizza as opposed to brick oven pizza. This places pizza is like a Grimaldi's or a Totonno's, so it might not be comparable to Di Fara's.

19. I think it's a brick oven place
I hear that it's basically just one old man who runs the place and makes all the pizzas by hand, to order.

He hand grates the cheese onto the pizza before he throws it into the oven.

Everything is evidently incredibly authentic and fresh/homemade.

14. The best pizza you've ever had came from a bar?

You must be new in New York. Well, you're in for some real eating, then.

Try Grimaldi's, L&B Spumoni Gardens, or Totonno's (Besides the original on Coney Island, there's also one on the Upper East Side):

Real pizzerias, not bars:

http://gonyc.about.com/cs/restaurants/gr/rr_grimaldis.htm

http://brooklyn.about.com/od/restaurants/gr/landbspumoni.htm

http://brooklyn.about.com/od/restaurants/gr/totonnos.htm

Totonno's also has a location on the Upper East side, now, if you don't want to shlep out to Coney Island (I happen to live close by it, lucky for me!). If these places are a little crowded, well, what do you expect? They're popular for a reason.

Good luck! :hi:

37. I don't know where you get the "flame" bit from...
...and, at this point, I don't much care.

Whether it's threads about fat people or whatever else some people like to get into knockdown, drag-out fights about, here, I've always avoided conflicts. The few times when I've walked into something that turned a little sour I've moved on quickly.

I would appreciate your allowing me to do that, here.

Like Grimaldi's and Tottono's and Liberty...So Nick's is traditional as opposed to brick oven (thin crispy crust)...It's an important distinction!

I guess you can't really compare the two though because they are sorta fundamentally different, so when I say this pizza is the best (IMO!), I guess I mean it's the best Brick Oven style...

Now, the question is, do I like Brick Oven style better than traditional? That my friend, is a good question! ;-) I guess it depends on my mood!
