they are by far the richest team in baseball, not by a little, but their total salary is 50% HIGHER than the team in second place, the red sox.

They let an admitted steroid user play first base.

They tried to force the worst team in the divison to FORFEIT a baseball game last year. That team couldn't make it to Yankee stadium because they were helping their families recover from a crippling natural disaster that had recently happened.

The owner, Steinbrenner, was convicted of making illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon, and was pardoned.


In the late 1990's there were considered 3 top shortstops in baseball, according to sports media: Nomar Garciaparra, Derek Jeter, and Alex Rodriguez. The Yankees now have two of them, and one plays third base.

The two of them earn 43.3 million dollars a year, more than the ENTIRE payroll for the 25-men roster of SIX teams.

So are you saying a liberal or a Democrat would support these things?

Like the Sox, The Rangers and a few other teams' owners don't have a pile of wealth but instead of spending it on their teams they spend it on their nightlife.

Their loss last year proves money doesn't buy everything and claiming they have the most of it is a weak excuse to hate them.

owners not spending money may be due to the sheer difficulty of making the playoffs. This problem of not spending money seems to be a problem unique to baseball.

If you finished in last place last year, and you know that if you spend 10 million dollars more, you can get into third place, would you do it? I could understand why you wouldn't... the difference between 3rd place and last place is essentially nothing. You still don't make the playoffs and probably aren't in the race. So essentially you get no return for your extra 10 million.



I agree that money doesn't guarantee a world series win every year, but understand that the Yankees have won the AL East EVERY year since 1998. that's six straight years. Thus they've made the playoffs every single year since then.

Steinbrenner and the Yankees oppose a salary cap, essentially insisting they have a right to spend as much money as they want, no matter the effect on the game as a whole.

If Steinbrenner agreed to the salary cap and agreed that he valued a level field of competition in baseball, then I would respect him. Unfortunately he only values one thing, winning.
