Poll question: Scariest movie?
Edited on Sun Apr-03-05 06:14 PM by Arkana
OK, I just got my star a couple of days ago, and I haven't played with the poll function yet. So this is what I'm starting out with: a scariest movie poll! Yes, that's right, of all the things I could have done, I chose horror flicks.

Which one of these did you find the scariest?

EDIT: These are based on the rankings of that Bravo special "100 Scariest Movie Moments." Also, switched "Deliverance" for "Carrie."

EDIT 2: Remembered that "The Shining" instead of "Child's Play" was in the top 8.

2. 28 Days Later
Possibly one of the scariest movies I had seen in a while. I literally was very nervous going to my car alone after the movie.

28. REALLY! That seems a bit intense for 8th graders, IMHO!
I mean, my husband and I were adults in our 20's when we saw it in the theater, and we literally jumped out of our seats during the famous "leap" scene...How did you handle the film?

23. The Ring was surprisingly good
My only complaint would be the lameness of the weird video compared to the one in Ringu. It was just too polished, with the use of CG and whatnot.

Damn shame The Ring Two is apparently quite shitty.

25. I watched Ringu too.
Ringu was scarier in a way because it lacked that self-conscious polished Hollywood quality. Watching it was like watching a documentary of something that had really happened.

Interesting tidbit: Ringu was based on a best-selling novel in Japan by the Japanese equivalent of Stephen King.

I am waiting to watch Ring Two on DVD because I heard it SUCKS!

It's probably the greatest slasher movie ever made. BTW, "100 Scariest Movie Moments." puts Halloween at 14.

24. Jaws
I saw that movie when I was a kid and for years afterward I'd have nightmares where I was in the ocean and some massive shark was coming up from underneath to get me and I could never get to safety in time. I also learned to love showers because baths weren't as safe.

Sharks could come get me anywhere, swimming pools, the bathtub, at the river or the lake, because they didn't know Sacramento is so far inland. Just when I was getting over my fear, a humpback whale got itself a hundred miles inland. If a fifty foot whale could do that, a shark could get here, I thought.

31. A shining example of what is wrong with horror films these days
Style over substance. Sure it has a somewhat creepy feel to it, but it has no plot whatsoever (at least none that I could figure out when I shut it off halfway through).

Good horror films are a combination of atmosphere and plot. If either is lacking, then the movie more often than not will suck.

39. A real oldie...
Edited on Mon Apr-04-05 01:25 AM by onager
No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream.

Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more.

Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.

Yes, I vote for The Haunting. The original from 1963 directed by Robert Wise, NOT that over-the-top piece of crap by Jan de Bont a couple of years ago.

In fact, if you want a great example of why modern movies suck so bad, watch the two of them back-to-back. Wise went for nuance and got it. The whole movie fills you with a creepy feeling that, any second, you're going to feel a chilly finger on your face.

I recently saw the original...on a rainy night here in L.A., for the perfect mood. And that damn thing STILL scared me! I'm a complete skeptic and non-believer when it comes to the supernatural (including religion).

The re-make? Pffft! It's about as scary as a 5-yr-old in a Halloween costume.
