Does DU have a weird vibe lately?
Or am I just noticing things I never noticed before?

Is it crazy to ask a serious question in the lounge and expect serious answers?

Not to begrudge youth anything.
Except a lack of life experiences held by their elders that merits respect-like it or not.
There seems to be a post count contest involving revisionists, for instance.
There's a weird vibe everywhere lately-including here.

36. The religiopallozaa is REALLY starting to grate on my nerves.
To the point that I hardly check GD anymore and I'm usually pretty regular about reading threads there. Just can't take it anymore, I already live in a part of the country where people dry hump poor ol' Jesus 24/7 and tell me I'm going to hell for not being the "right" kinda Christian.

29. It's my theory that DU operates in "waves."
I haven't come up with a pithy name for the waves yet, but here are some examples:

Just prior to the election: the wave was strong and solid, the wagons had circled. God help ANYONE who said ANYTHING that could be construed as negative about Kerry. I'm not saying that was a bad thing, circling the wagons is a necessity and politics ain't no tea party.

Right after the election: well, we all know. Implosion Central. To be expected.

Right now, four months out (God, almost five, I just realized!), I think we are hitting a lull....you know like, oh God, so it's really sinking in now, right?

Like that. Did that make any sense at all?

Right after the election IRL I was a tear-soaked lump under the bed.

Right now, IRL, I'm enjoying (NOT!) the spectacle of my local democratic party organization having all-you-can-eat day on Our Own. So to speak. And that's, like, IRL, not just on a message board, which is pretty terrifying. I think it's gonna calm down soon, though. Fingers crossed.

34. People say this constantly....
Ever since I've started on DU, every week or so, someone posts this same thread, differently worded. I just want to know: what, exactly, are they noticing that's so out of the ordinary? and of course, i never get specific answers.

DU doesn't change or suddenly take on "weird vibes," those kinds of observations are totally subjective.

So, my opinion on this is: DU has ALWAYS had a "weird vibe." that's why I hang out here!

And I think we all need to calm down. Our emotions are under constant manipulation by the media and our leaders. Sometimes we all need to take a step back and evaluate what's really important instead of getting drawn into emotional whirlpools.

Other than that, we all rock.

And "lower labial".....that's gross. LOL

When I was taking linguistics in college, we had to learn the names for all the different sounds humans make. One of the categories is "interlabial." I must be a 12 year old inside, because I never could say that term in front of anyone without having to supress a strong urge to giggle really hard.

aka bronx cheer. THat was always one of my favorite linguistic terms.

I think the wave theory of DU makes sense. There is a lull, then a new topic comes to the fore, then a giant wave, a maelstrom, a whirlpool, calmer waters, until the next big topic floats in and the process starts all over again.

90. What's your deal?
Go on with your bad self saying me and my "pals" are responsible for it. I just post here, lady. If you've got personal problems, try starting a new thread to hash it out.

80. Yeah, kind of.
I think it's due to the Schiavo mess and all the religious vs. atheism wars.

professional whiners.

87. Well,
I don't have a dog in this fight, really, I just get frustrated when there's 30 threads over the same thing that has been rehashed over and over. Hide thread is a valuable function in these cases.

84. No, it does not have a weird vibe. It is a kewl vibe!
In fact, I have asked a couple serious questions myself in the past 14 days, and they have been responded to with serious replies.

You might also note that, when someone here suffers a loss, is sick, or asks for geuine help with something, they receieve immediate caring support, promises of prayers, and straight answers.

It is the fabulous mix of these kind of straight answers and support, along with totally off the wal zaniness, that I like about this place. So I disagree pretty strongly with some other replies in this thread, saying it has been taken over by immature types.

I urge you to run back through the past 20 pages of threads and stop to look just at the ones with serious subjects. You will invariably find the serious and caring replies of a great group of people.

The rest of the posts are just for fun.

92. Not that I've noticed, no.
So I can't answer your second question...

And as for your third... hell no! Of course, you should count on getting at least a few snarky responses... but I love those. :)
