I just wrote & produced my first-ever PSA!
I made this PSA for WPVM... the community-run station where I volunteer. It a spoof about corporate-MSM.

If you'd like to hear it, go to my site:

www.brainshrub.com

Then click on the brainshrub logo on the top of the page. Enjoy.

Input & suggestions are welcome.

4. Funny promo, a few suggestions from a former DJ
If you can, drop your voice about an octave when you're on air. You don't need to sound like Barry White, but a little more bass is always good for on air guys.

Pot down your background music a little more when you're speaking. When your voice tone raises, it is getting a bit lost in the BS music.

Experiment with your mic angle and distance. You're not popping your Ps too bad, but you're spitting out your S's and Sh's, along with really flattening your short A's. Try it with the mic perpindicular to the position your mouth is.

Finally, if you were speaking in the rhythm that you normally speak in while on air, stop it. You're a bit herky-jerky, with sudden pitch and volume changes. Work on putting out a smoother delivery. I realize that this isn't a pro station, but it is where you get your start, work on your delivery, and is a stepping stone to the pros if you wish to follow that route.

One other suggestion, save all of your tape and go over it after you've completed the final piece. You wouldn't believe how many times that I've found the outtakes much better suited for airplay than the "real" piece.

Good luck, and have fun. Radio is a blast, especially community or college radio. You can do things there that you would get canned for on the pro stations.

8. Well good luck, and do have fun
Pro radio, quite frankly sucks. Zero creative freedom, crappy music, and unless you're in the top ten US markets, crappy pay. But radio work is sooooo addicting. I still go back and get on the air once in awhile at my local community station when I really get that urge to go on air. Who knows, if I get some extra money I might just start my own internet radio station.

By the by, if you're doing late night shifts, have a bit of tech savvie, and aren't afraid of being fired or FCC fines, you too can be heard coast to coast. Drop your stations broadcast frequency down to CB levels(26-27 Mhz). For every watt of power your station has, at CB frequencies your signal will carry aprox five miles, ie 800 watts, 4000 mile range. Yes, me buds and I did this ages ago, and didn't get caught. But that was before the FCC became such real asshole Nazis.

Anyway, gotta go, post some more of your work sometime.

9. I didn't know that!
Perhaps an accident will happen someday soon that will make the frequency go down.

Who knows?

11. I agree with the drop in octave. When I co-hosted the Guy James...
...Show (Ie. sat in and barked at freep callers) I was shocked when I first heard my relatively low voice go high on the recording.

Good advise.
