4. I like the "musical" genre of music, personally.
Rock, jazz, blues, electronica, classical...I can't pick one favourite. Too limiting. There's too much good stuff out there, in every genre.

Granted, it would be hard to choose an absolute favorite genre, but that's a biggie.

8. I like something of pretty much every genre, but
if I had to pick one I'd say "rock." That encompasses a very wide range of sounds, though!

I mean bk electronica goes with raves. And raves are all about drugs and wet t-shirt contests. :)

I like some electronica too.

30. No...
... but it's really funny you should mention that, I had a dream last night that involved me going to a club and using a "club drug".

In real life, I've never even used that drug, go figure :) Plus, I'm too damn old for that stuff anyway.

Truth is, the sort of music I really really like would never be played at any club, it is just not dancing music no matter what label the crits try to give it. It is purely mind music :)

13. For me it's a toss-up between classical and world
Most of my CDs are classical, with an emphasis on choral music, but the next largest category is world music: Eastern European, Japanese, Middle Eastern, South African, Brazilian, Cuban, and bits of others.

33. Forgot to add my favorites:
The Brazil Classics series collected by David Byrne and the Cuba Classics series are a great intro to those regions.

There's a collection of Scandinavian music called The Sweet Sunny North.

My favorite Indian music is from a disc called The Film Music of Satyajit Ray, which is music from the soundtracks of films like Pather Panchali and Two Daughters.

Anyway, there's literally a whole world of great music out there!

15. Classic rock
Edited on Tue Mar-29-05 11:03 PM by mvd
Including artists like The Beatles, Elvis, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, and many more. So I chose other.

But I love a lot of different kinds of music -

Big band (Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Dean Martin, and many more)

Rock (Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, The Bangles, Fleetwood Mac, Blondie, The Police, Janis Joplin, U2, R.E.M., and many more)

Folk (Peter, Paul, & Mary, Pete Seeger, Linda Thompson, new-age folk like Loreena McKennitt, and more)

Motown and R&B (Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, The Temptations, The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, and more)

Pop/rock (Elton John, The Corrs, Avril Lavigne, Hope 7, Madonna, Shanti, Rembrandts, Bonnie McKee, Michelle Branch, Finn Brothers, Billy Joel (especially early Billy,) and many more)

Folk/rock and singer/songwriter (Sarah McLachlan, Abra Moore, Indigo Girls, Elliott Smith, Cindy Alexander, and many more)

Alternative (Garbage, Hole/Courtney Love, Kay Hanley, Stone Temple Pilots, Alanis Morissette, Pearl Jam, Rilo Kiley, New Pornographers, and many more)

Country (Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Dixie Chicks, Hank Sr., Garth Brooks, Patty Loveless, George Strait, Martina McBride, Alan Jackson, Jim Reeves, newcomers like Miranda Lambert, and many more)

Alt-Country (Kasey Chambers, Kathleen Edwards, Anne McCue, Steve Earle, Wilco, The Jayhawks, and more)

Classical (Beetoven, Mozart, Vivaldi, Wagner, and more)

But that's not all. I also listen to some world music, dance, newer R&B, and harder stuff (Ozzy, Metallica, certain Queens Of The Stone Age music, Lennon Murphy, System Of A Down)

That crap floods the air waves. I listen to rock only! And sometimes something smooth from Michelle Branch or Alicia Keys.

26. It would be easier to list the kinds of music I DON'T like
Boybands/Britney/Bubblegum
Cheese ballads by bands who are supposed to be "rock" or "metal"
Disco
Freepaganda "Country"

I can listen to just about anything else depending on the mood. No classical if I'm driving though - it would knock me right out.

28. When asked what music I like, I always respond...
Rock, Pop, and R+B from the 70s and the 80s, with a smidgen of the 60s, a smattering of the 90s, and an inkling of the 00s (I pronounce this decade the "Oughts", by the way :) ). That basically sums up my musical tastes in a nutshell, even though my tastes might even be a bit broader than that.

29. Classical - but not really mainstream
Rennaissance music kicks ass majorly, as does most Baroque - but less so instrumental stuff (my whole C.D. collection is heavily biased towards sacred music), getting into the Classical era I become very very picky.

The 19th century is mostly a dead-loss for me. The big exception is Wagner - I know he was a pretty screwed-up guy and his views were beastly, but his music is stunning. The other exception is syrupy English church music, if you know any of the sacred works of Sir Arthur Sullivan you'll know the style exactly.

The 20th century just gets better and better. The French organ school (starting with Saint-Seans in the 19th c., and flowing right through to the present with Naji Hakim) is without doubt one of the greatest periods of creativity known to man. Olivier Messiaen stands head and shoulders above everybody else, a major part of that organ school but also reaching far beyond it too (Turangalila and Quator pour le fin de temps - to name but 2 examples). Later in the century, the mystic minimalists arise, my favourite being Arvo Paert (had Kanon Pokajanen and Passio on many times during Lent).
