2. I Only Fainted

in 9th grade doing that hyperventilation trick. But I don't think that counts.

3. Yeah...

I fainted right after having a grand mal seizure. When I woke up, I was strapped to a hospital bed in the back of an ambulance. I've never been more scared in my entire life. :scared:

4. I blacked out once when I had the flu.

One minute I was getting something to drink and the next I was face down on the floor. It was the first time something like that ever happened to me. I did manage to get my drink, then I went straight back to bed.

I was walking downtown and suddenly I started to see everything gray, as if I'd lost blood or something. I fumbled into a bar and sat down for a few minutes. Weird. Never happened again.

7. It's almost routine

Hypoglycemia plus being prone to vasovagal syncope. I faint every so often, come to on the floor with people panicking around me, pop a Glucotab or two and am fine by the time EMTs arrive.

I had the water too warm. I quickly found out that any time I got too warm I could easily hit the dirt.

I literally had to sit in the bathroom floor to blow my hair dry every day.

34. Watching someone else donate blood...

... caused me to faint. There never was any visible blood. Before the procedure started I jokingly told the person next to me that I might faint, and much to my amazement I actually did. Another incident was while using a cell phone. It was an old 1998 model weighing half a pound, and I suspect it was leaking radiation.

13. Cut my finger to the bone while twirling on a barstool at the home

of a friend. Just thought I pinched it until I saw all the blood. I did a rubber face plant (fainted, came to as I hit the ground and bounced right back up) while running for the door. Not fun.

15. I've fainted twice

Once when I donated blood after NOT eating lunch; I felt myself slip to the floor and remember gazing up at several concerned faces. The first time I fainted was on August 12, 1975, the day I got my ears pierced (age almost 13). It was a miserably hot Kansas day, and I was a nervous wreck. I got through the piercing all right, but when we got outside the jewelry store I whirled around and crashed into the store window, breaking my glasses. Not embarrassing in the least! :blush:

I was at the hospital visiting someone. The hospital room was very warm, and the person I was visiting looked terrible--something I was not really prepared for.

I've fainted more that a few times. When I was 5 I got the stomach flu and fainted (and threw up) at the beauty parlor. When I was in college I had a nasty case of the flu and fainted several times b/c of dehydration. I also get migraines and every once and a while it gets so bad that I get tunnel vision and pass out.

In the dress rehearsal for my third grade Christmas play, I had locked my knees and sort-of fainted. But I fell forward, staggered to my knees, and didn't fully pass out.

I didn't mind missing the rest of that dress rehearsal, anyway. It was a pretty odd concept- kind of a blend of the Xmas story and the intricacies of the U.S. Constitution. Pretty heavy stuff for third graders. haha I got to talk about the freedom of assembly and petition. In fact, that's what I was saying when I passed out.

Hypoglycemic, mildly anemic, freakishly low blood pressure, virtually no
tolerance for hot weather and sun exposure, and squeamishness at the sight of blood. It's a wonder I can stay conscious at all.

And I almost fainted while getting a 15-minute neck/shoulder massage once, for no apparent reason whatsoever.

I've never passed out from drinking, though. Drinking makes me wired and keeps me up late.

30. It could be that your shoulder/neck massage could have made

contact with a couple of tissue masses in your neck called the carotid bodies. If these are contacted firmly for some time, they can cause you to faint or something like that. Pressure there can slow the heart rate and that can cause you to faint. I helped take care of a patient who's carotid bodies were so sensitive that he needed a pacemaker. After that, he was fine. 25. Almost once

Hot baths are a bad idea when you're pregnant. However when you're ten months pregnant (yep, you read that right,) have a shoulder injury you can't take meds for and you've put on almost half again your normal weight they're the only way to get somewhat comfortable. At least until the world gets a bit gray around the edges, that's sort of scary.

The time I couldn't lift myself up and had to sit in my rapidly cooling bath for an hour and a half until LD got home from work sucked too. I'm so glad I've got grab bars in the bathroom now, that'll come in handy next time I get knocked up. :)

27. As a nurse, and reading all these comments,

it's pretty interesting, medically speaking. I've never fainted myself, but have come close once (I think). Hot water can make your blood pressure drop because the heat causes the blood vessels to expand and then the pressure drops, and the blood vanishes out of your brain. You need to get down when that happens to allow the blood to return to your brain. Otherwise, you could have a Schiavo case on your hands.

Oddly, it's the only time I dreamed while passed out! I toppled over and suddenly found myself looking down at a futuristic city where the streets were lighted tubes, like wires, and I was flying above it in a small aircraft. It was wild!

My mom rushed in when she heard me fall and was terrified because my eyes were still open...

Once in church - all that kneeling and standing, kneeling and standing, kneeling...collapsing on the pew. I was Catholic.

Second/third time...I have a genetically inherited medical condition that brings on vasovagal reactions to epinephrine (I think). Causes me to lose consciousness and wake up dizzy and vomiting. Sometimes I don't lose consciousness, but simply vomit.

Now, I always tell doctors not to use it on me. There's alternative drug that works fine for me.

36. Twice, but within minutes of each other

I had the worst stomach virus when I was about 11. Every night I was throwing up and when I did sleep, I'd get a raging fever.
So I decided I'd get a nice, cold glass of water. (During this period, I refused to drink water from the bathroom, so I walked to the kitchen.)

I filled up my cup, and gulped some down. About that time my mom walked out of the bathroom off the kitchen. And boom, I was down. I woke up immediately, and saw my mom's feet scurrying over to me. She helped me up, and was going to lay me down on the couch in the den, instead of going all the way back to my room. I reached the doorway to the den, and boom was out again. I don't remember getting to the couch.

The cold water was a shock to my system, since my fever was usually at 102.

37. After some minor surgery

Lost some blood and they tried to get me out of there sooner than they should have. I collapsed in the hospital lobby and my then fiancee screamed!! So she said. She then put me in a wheelchair and wheeled me out real fast.

38. Drank beer and stood up quickly after sitting outdoors in a hot spring

in the dead of winter. The rapid hot-cold temperature change, alcohol and fatigue after driving for four hours prior made my knees turn to butter right under me. I recovered quickly, which is good because I went down in the water of the bath and was the only one around at the time.

It really freaked me out. I had never fainted before and am a healthy 34 so, I thought, what gives? I got indoors and sat in the sauna for ten minutes or so, showered, and went indoors to rest.

41. I know a guy

who has the special distinction of having fainted in high school at a crowded function in the auditorium. The crowd was asked to stand. So my friend was standing in the upper tiers of seats and when he fainted, he catapulted forward across two rows of seats, flailing everyone in his path and landing with his chin on a concrete step. Needless to say this did not do much for his social standing, and he instantly went from being a forgettable nurd to a notorious nurd. Makes a good story in the retelling many years later. Nobody was seriously hurt.

I was standing in a restaurant after eating a large Italian dinner.
The restaurant owner was telling a long-winded story and I was aware of locking my knees to endure this. All of a sudden, I blacked out. The surprised owner instinctively caught me so I didn't crash down on the floor.

What I took away from this--(as they tell people in bands and military parades who have to stand for a long time)--never lock your knees, always keep them slightly flexed. Before that I never realized how important it is to keep that blood volume steady.

once when I had a blood test and once when I was with my mother when she was undergoing cancer tests. The first time it happened so fast that one minute I was sitting up and the next I was laying on the floor and they were holding smelling salts under my nose. The other time we were in the hospital and I was watching as they ran some test on my mother. I felt warm all of a sudden and put my head down and the next instant someone hurried over and put me on a gurney. I was so embarrassed :blush: since I was supposed to be there for moral support and then I was the one who fainted. :-(

My boss was telling me stories of crime scene discoveries from his days as a cop. Really disgusting stuff. I hadn't eaten at all that day and suddenly found myself go pale and I fell on the floor.

49. Last June...

We were having a party day in my Soc. class because the teacher was retireing after some 36+ years. I was sitting down, and the next thing I know I'm on the ground with a bunch of people standing over me. I had hit a few desks on the way down and was out for about 30 seconds.

They sent me home... they think it was the heat.

The LAST time I did this (at age 8 or so), was when I was standing on the edge of a cement cellar hole. I woke up at the bottom of the hole with a pretty big lump on my head.
