Saw something odd on television
It was a little commercial showing Edward James Almos promoting Battlestar Galactica on a Spanish broadcast. In it, he mentioned it was the first time Latinos are shown in outer space.

I have been watching the show (one of the few I do watch) since the beginning and it never occurred to me that he was a Latino. Just like it never occurred to me that Alessandro Juliani was (or really even that Kandyse McClure is black). They are just actors playing great characters in a excellent television show worth paying my cable bill to see.

When will our culture get past the need to differentiate ourselves?

1. I have to admit if I get wrapped up in a show
I really don't notice what color, race or nationality they are. Though once during a parody it the nationality of the actors was made fun of (notice how in Star Wars the command of the Death Star is all British actors) I think one day when thing are truly equal we will learn that the differences don't actually matter. But at the moment it is rather important to make sure that all people are represented especially in science fiction since it is usually about the future and in a way it says that you to have a future.

2. Seems like it should be the opposite
That such differences would be archaic.

3. First time Latinos shown in space?
Bill Dana is not Hispanic, but:

ON MAY FIFTH, CINCO DE MAYO, 1961, THE FIRST WORDS FROM EARTH TO AN AMERICAN ENTERING SPACE: "OKAY, JOSE, YOU'RE ON YOUR WAY!"

On July 20th of 1966 the presentation for Astronaut Donald K. "Deke" Slayton's enshrinement in the National Aviation Hall of Fame in Dayton, Ohio was made by Bill "Jose Jimenez" Dana. Also presenting to another honoree was Neil Armstrong. Those who are unaware of the special connection between Bill/Jose and America's space program may wish to learn why, when appropriate comedy and great stress meet, interesting things can happen.
