1. Yes, you can file online even if you have to do the
whole complicated enchilada. I always use Turbo Tax and they file online for you, complete with schedule A B C D E F G through Z. :P

5. You nearly always have to pay someone to efile Federal taxes
The IRS doesn't recommend anyone in particular, though they have a listing on their website of a whole bunch. I think the filing fee is waived if you are low-income; again though, depends on who's efiling for you.

8. Look for deals on the software

I usually get TaxCut and TaxCut State and end up paying about $20 total after rebates. TaxCut comes with a rebate for the filing fee ($15.95) and the state version.

You can also download the software if you want it asap. Not sure about costs and rebates, as I always get cds from the store.

6. I use Taxact

It's free to prepare and print your tax forms and mail them in. Or you can pay 7.95 if you want to efile. They have 1040 plus the schedules. You can check it out at taxact.com.

They do charge extra to prepare your state taxes so I always do those on paper but my financial life isn't very complicated.:)

You can do it all over the internet, nothing to download and it's super easy. That's why I like it.
