OK so I had my grad school interview on Friday
It went fabulously well. I was freaking out a bit in the beginning as we were rushing to catch the train and I tripped and spilled coffee all up my arm on my nicest shirt. A panic attack and a trip to the Filene's Basement at Union Square later and I was shaking hands with Marshal Arisman, one of the greatest American illustrators alive.

Marshall was extraordinarily nice and we hit it off very well. I learned some interesting facts. There are only 20 spaces in the department which means they let in 10 people a year. The waiting list I'm on consists of 8 people. I think, that by virtue of this meeting, that I'm at or near the top.

Marshall took me around and introduced me to all the students at work in their cubes in a secret floor that undergrads are not privy to. After seeing the community that he's built and the caliber of work the students are creating I want to be there 10 times more.

At the end Marshall shook my hand, told me it was wonderful to meet me and they wouldn't know until mid to late April. So there you have it.

He liked my work and said there was no concrete reason I was wait listed rather than accepted as my work was very strong. He said its the politics of the judging committee.

Vibes would be appreciated!

Now I'm all the more bummed we weren't able to meet up (my schedule was friggin' crazy, too, I'll tell you about it some other time). All the good vibes I can muster are headed your way on the quick, brother.

PS: I'm so fucking jealous you got to meet Marshall Arisman, you fucking fuck.

15. Yeah - he was suave as hell. And, for as dark as his work is,
he's calm and really friendly. You can tell the department is his little hive and being there you are like one of his kids. I was like "Marshall, now that you showed me all this I have to be here!"

I hope your gigging rocked to the fully. And thanks again man, sincerely!

13. All right, man!
I knew you'd ace it, brah.

You should also be psyched since this guy's own work is so strong; his positive opinion of yer stuff is validation enough.

Good work man!

I was sending you some positive vibes on Friday. It was also great that you got to see the Dept. in action. A lot of folks don't always get to see things up close and personal before they go.

25. Yeah - it was eye opening. The people there truly seem to be
working as a community rather than in the competative environment we had there in the undergrad world. Marshall told me that that was his goal in creating the program.

Thanks TE!

On a side note, why type of art is your specialty? Do you prefer one medium over another? Just curious.

23. Well pen & ink has always been my standard. In undergrad
I fell in love with a technique of watercolor where you work on smooth bristol board and thus can wipe hilights out more like oil painting. Lately, however, I've been working with alot of digital imagery.

Thanks for the vibes

Holy cow, man! Major kudos on your kudos... that must've felt sooo nice. :)

Was thinking about you recently re: funding -- have you considered going for a Ph.D.? Someone I know got tuition waivers for doing that... just a thought.

Sending good vibes your way... and will keep you in my prayers.

Well done!

They don't have PhD's in my field. In fact there are only 3 or 4 MFA Illustration programs and SVA's is, perhaps, the finest.

:scared:

Thanks for the love, and back at'cha!

BTW, how do you handle your panic attacks. Had a major one last night-hadn't had one in like a month and a half. Still haven't taken any of the pills the doc gave me.

42. Not really scared
If all the recreational drugs I've done haven't killed me.....
I'm just wondering if I can function on them like at work, etc.
or if they'll make me too relaxed and in a good mood that i'll have no idea as to what the hell I'm doing.

My friend took Prozac for quite a while and she said she had no idea what the hell she was doing on them, that they made her so happy that she would just go on a shopping spree and spend hundreds and not realize it b/c that's what made her happy.

But if your doctor prescribed them they're worth a trial. See how you feel and talk to your doc. Best of luck, btw!
