Crowded House drummer dead
Former Crowded House and Split Enz drummer and TV personality Paul Hester committed suicide on Saturday after a long battle with depression.

Police reportedly found his body in Elsternwick Park near his home.

A message, sent to Crowded House and Split Enz fan club email lists said: "Everyone, sitting here in the office trying to figure out what to write, we are a bit messed up at the moment. Last night, our mate, and Crowded House drummer Paul Hester, took his own life.

"Over the years Paul has swung the extremes of happiness and sadness, but none of us ever thought this would happen. He loved life too much . . . "

Crowded House was one of Australia's most successful bands of the late 1980s and early '90s. Formed out of the ashes of New Zealand's Split Enz in 1985, it featured Hester on drums, Neil Finn on vocals and guitar, and Nick Seymour on bass.

My sister has had it for 9 years. I have to hug her every
day to make her feel a little better. :(

Those guys were a good band too.

7. How sad.
They had a different drummer at the time, but Split Enz was my first concert, in Edmonton in 1981, and I saw Crowded House at the same venue almost exactly ten years later.

Tim Ahern, now Paul Hester....

Kiwi drummers seem rather hard to keep ahold of. :(

10. Here's how I'll remember him.
My telly's gone bung
What am I to do about the ABC
My telly's gone bung
What am I to do about my predicament
My telly's gone bung
I plugged it it in and it turned me off again

I've waited up for you
To come alive and bring some truth back to me yeah
Cos I'm where I wanna be in front of my TV

My telly's gone bung
What am I to do about Kylie & Jason now
My telly's gone bung
I don't really care for their predicament

I've waited up for you
To come alive and bring some truth back to me yeah
Cos I'm where I wanna be in front of my TV

If it was up to me
I'd let these people see
What people do
I've been watching you too

I've waited up for you
To come alive and bring some truth back to me yeah
Cos I'm where I wanna be in front of my TV

If it was up to me
I would let these lovely people see
If it was up to me
If it was up to me
If it was up to me
If it was up to me
If it was up to me

Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only the shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on the snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush,
Of quiet birds in circled flight;
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die.

18. Hester hanged himself
<snip>
Metropolitan Ambulance Service spokeswoman Liraje Memishi told AAP ambulance officers arrived at the scene about 1.55pm (AEDT) and reported that Hester had "attempted suicide" and suffered "strangulation".

Officers declared him dead more than 20 minutes later, Ms Memishi said.

"They attempted resuscitation but he was dead when they arrived. There was nothing they could do," she said.

Although Ms Memishi would not publicly confirm where the body was found, reports have suggested Hester was found hanging from a tree.

Fan website frenz.com reported Hester had committed suicide.

``Frenz.com deeply regrets to inform you that Paul Hester of Split Enz, Crowded House, Largest Living Things, and many other great projects, has taken his own life,'' the website said.

``It is not a hoax or a rumour. At this point, it has been confirmed though we have no other details at this time.''

24. Crowded House is my favorite band of all time
I was gone for the weekend so I didn't find out until this morning. Needless to say I am wrecked. It's so sad. It's a loss for this world. His poor little girls, they're never going to be the same.

RIP Paul.

27. (S)he goes on
Pretty soon you'll be able to remember her
Lying in the garden singing
Right where she'll always be
The door is always open

This is the place that I loved her
And these are the friends that she had
Long may the mountain ring
To the sound of her laughter
And she goes on and on

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
'Till we see her once again
In a world without end

We owe it all to Frank Sinatra
The song was playing a she walked into the room
After the long weekend
They were a lifetime together

Appearing in the eyes of children
In the clear blue mountain view
The colouring in the sky
And painting ladders to heaven
And she goes on

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
'Till we see her once again
In a world without end

In her soft wind I will whisper
In her warm sun I will glisten
And I always will remember
In a world without end
She goes on
She goes on
She goes on

*******************************

All I ask
Is to live each moment
Free from the last
Take the road forgotten
Don't leave me here
Oh, please let me stray
Far from familiar things

All I ask
Is to live each moment
All I ask
Is to live each moment
Free from the last

Strange roads
Going nowhere
Going nowhere in particular

All I ask
Is to live each moment
All I ask
Is to live each moment
Free from the last
Free from the last
All I ask

29. I always remembered him as the happy, madcap one............
in all the CH videos. In a million years, I never would have seen this coming. I guess that speaks to how crafty of an illness depression is.

Condolences to his fam and all the CH fans here at DU.

30. Love This Life
Seal my fate
I get your tongue in the mail
No one is wise
Until they see how it lies
Love this life
Don’t wait till the next one comes
Pedal my faith
The wheels are still turning round, turn round

And maybe the day will come
When you’ll never have to feel no pain
After all my complaining
Gonna love this life
Gonna love this life

And so they threw you in jail
Whatever you’ve done
It was a million to one
And don’t you just love this life
When it’s holding you down
Pedal my faith
The wheels are still turning round, turn round

So maybe the day will come
When you’ll never have to feel no pain
After all my complaining
Gonna love this life
Gonna love this life

There’s something that you can do
Even if you think that I hate you
Stop your complaining leave me defenseless
When you love this life
Gotta love this life
Love this life though you’ll never know why
Gonna love this life
Gonna love
