I couldn't find Russell Stover's Chocolate Crosses ANYWHERE!
They've sold out at my local stores. There is this big hullabaloo going on over how selling these crosses is sacrilicious-I mean, sacrilegious. We have had chocolate crosses SINCE I WAS A KID, and now they're EVIL? :wtf:

Snip:

"However, not all Christians are happy about it. Chomping on a chocolate cross can be offensive to some, said Joseph McAleer, a spokesman for the Roman Catholic diocese in Bridgeport, Conn.

"The cross should be venerated, not eaten, nor tossed casually in an Easter basket beside the jelly beans and marshmallow Peeps," he said. "It's insulting.""

ALL THIS CHRISTIAN OVER-SENSITIVITY IS FREAKING ME OUT-AND I'M CATHOLIC!!!

23. I always put a chocolate cross in my children's easter baskets
I thought I was reminding them of the holiday, I didn't think I was showing disrespect.

I am Catholic, too and sometimes these guys go too far.

3. the cross comes in many forms. I don't know how they would
put a stop to this sort of thing. maybe they should try to trademark the cross and become the sole owner of the image.

the thing that bothers me are people who are hypersensitive to criticism of the Pope. If he inserts himself into the political issues of the day then I believe HE is fair game, especially if he is on the wrong side of what we stand for here at DU.

4. The whole idea of the cross just freaks me out anyway
I mean, why do followers of Christ hold sacred the very physical representation of the vehicle of death for him. Seems it would make more sense to have something that represents something a bit more positive about his life, wouldn't it?

I saw the chocolate crosses at Walgreens. Perhaps there is one near you that isn't sold out yet?

5. in a catalog, I saw Cross sucker-pops.
I told one of my church-people "I wonder if Jesus was killed in a different manner if they would market little electric-chair-pops, or noose-pops, or guillotine-pops."

Something about sucking on a cross at Easter doesn't sit well with me.

(I don't mind the chocolate crosses, BTW.)

17. I saw some in the store today
when I was buying Easter goodies for my kid. Like Eric Bell/ Kobzybinski says - this is what my husband tells me) says, the map is not the territory. I think the cross is a really old symbol of death and rebirth, winter to spring. It shouldn't be any more sacrosanct than anything else.

Hope you're feeling better, dear. Get the ladies to serve you tonight, especially since it's ASTB night! ;)

18. Yeah, the 'Nicene Christians'
If you know the Nicene Creed:

"Born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried."

In other words, the Nicene Creed, and most fundies, totally ignore the man's words, thoughts, and deeds of his more than 30 years on earth. They're only interested in the manger scene and the cross.

19. Actually, that's the Apostles' Creed.
Although both creeds do contain the theology.

The Nicene Creed was written in 325 CE. Apostles' in 382 CE.

I've never heard the term "Nicene Christians" before. The Catholic Church uses the Nicene Creed in its liturgy. However, most fundie churches that I know of are non-creedal churches. They take pride in that, since it sets them apart from Catholics (who are evil, to them).

The Nicene Creed is a beautiful creed. It is the Church's first attempt to articulate its theology. And because it was written so early, it is also the Creed of the Eastern (Orthodox) as well as the Western Churches.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father: through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in the one holy catholic (universal) and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

22. Yes, I understand that. My point is
that these creeds do not say anything about Jesus' work on earth. It goes right from virgin birth to death and resurrection. The fundie Christians I know fall right into this. They ignore Jesus' words about helping the poor, being inclusive, and not judging: because they do not help the poor, exclude many, and judge all the time.

9. I heard about that on the news tonight.
I didn't even know about them. I guess it's easier for them to get upset over more trivial things than to do something about serious things.

It's not a place where one would find sacrilege.

21. Didn't you hear?
*ush signed a law prohibiting the removing and munching of the chocolate cross--it is sacreligious! The state police raided the local walmart and removed them to a save house. The community aided the police by adopting them out. They are now safely on the walls of local churches. Thank god we are safe from pagans denegrating our country by destroying crosses at Easter.

In a related story: The showdown between the state police and Betty the greeter was not without problems. She refused to give the police plastic instead of paper, and the rain destroyed 1/3 of the chocolate crosses. Several local protesters were on their knees with their heads to the ground shouting, "God, why oh why did you make it rain today?" The heathens accused the protesters of pretending to pray while secretly eating the broken cross pieces as they lay in the parking lot.

24. I live about 2 miles from a Rus Stover store and 10 miles from their HQ's
Maybe I'll jog down there with the dog this afternoon and do a little investigating. It happens to be across the street from the turnaround point on the running trail by me. Me and the little fella could use the 4 mile Wog (half walk, half jog) this afternoon.
