Oasis absolutely PUNKS the Who
Obviously Ringo's son knows a good thing when he sees it. I guess I will have to give the Beatles some credit for that.

Don't cry, little Pete.

THE WHO SCRAP TOUR AND ALBUM

British rock legends THE WHO have ditched plans to tour this year (05) after drummer ZAK STARKEY pulled out to work with OASIS.

Starkey, son of former BEATLES drummer RINGO STARR, has pledged to work with the WONDERWALL stars until January 2006 - meaning ROGER DALTREY and PETE TOWNSHEND are unable to perform as The Who.

Starkey - the latest replacement drummer for tragic rock icon KEITH MOON - has been helping Oasis out since the British stars sacked ALAN WHITE last year (04).

Townshend, 59, says, "Shows we hoped to do in the summer seemed to fizzle and we lost our drummer to Oasis until January 2006.

1. A cynic would say
a has been band has lost out to a band that never will be. (Except in their own delusional minds)

2. I bet Oasis needed a Who member just to get attendence
30 years from now, we won't be talking about Oasis and their contribution to music.

23. But you sure as hell are talking about Oasis now
The Who were a damn good band once, but stupid songs like "who are you" and "you better you bet" severely diminished their legacy. On the other hand, Oasis is all the buzz.

3. Couldn't give a flying fuck about Oasis one way or the other, but....
...I'm happy that another travesty of a "Who" tour got cancelled.

The Who died with Keith Moon.

4. The Who should do us a favor and call it a career
but Oasis is 1/100th the band that The Who was in their prime.

5. Oasis is CRAP
Always has been CRAP.

Always will be CRAP.

They can't hold a candle to The Who in their prime. But with Keith Moon and Jon Entwhistle both gone, I can understand why Zak doesn't want to tour with the leftovers any more. All future Who tours would do is enrich the Pete Townshend Retirement Fund.

7. I saw them in '82 with The Clash
and they were calling that their "Farewell Tour."

God I hope they retire. Maybe Pete can make some money doing soundtracks or something.

20. I saw Roger Daltrey in a lame infomercial
Selling oldies. Kind of sad, but I think they do need money. Maybe Noel can give them some of his 87 million pounds.

21. You won't be saying that when the new Oasis album comes out May 30
Noel says it is awesome. Back to DM form.

That being said, I love the Who, but they need to get a better stockbroker and give it up.

8. Ringo was in no way a bad drummer
That's frankly a bizarre assertion. What would a good drummer be, then? Someone who solos for minutes on end?

Ringo was not technically perfect, but he was astonishingly creative.

9. bizarre assertation or not
the Beatle's history is dotted with speculation that Best was fired to hire the technically inferior Starr because Ringo was better looking and had more charisma.

I guess Paul said it best:

http://www.beatlelinks.net/forums/archive/index.php/t-12409.html
Journalist : "What do you think about the statements that Ringo isn't the best drummer in the world?"

Paul : "He isn't the best drummer in the world. He isn't the best drummer in the Beatles."

11. Knowing Paul, I think he was talking about himself.

(and I've seen pictures of Best- no way was super-schnozz considered better looking than Pete. Pete was fired because he wouldn't cut his hair into teh Beatle do.)

It's well-known that on later albums Paul would re-record Ringo's drumming, error-free. But saying that Paul is a better drummer than Ringo is certainly not saying Ringo was BAD. (Paul could play just about anything error free on whatever instrument you got. He's PaulFriggin'McCartney.)

But I stand by Ringo's creativity. After all, the drum parts were still largely concocted by him, and you simply can't have good music with bad drumming.

And at the link you sent me to, there were a lot more quotes from the other Beatles talking about how great Ringo was and only one that impunged his rep in any way.

What're you, a Pete Best fan? ;)

14. a pete best fan
that's rich. The Star Club record is the only release I have heard him on, if I am right there - wren't those tapes made on the 1st trip to Germany when Pete was still with 'em? Don't think his body of work was too large. :)

Of course the link I posted was pro-Ringo - it was Beatles board. It was the particular quote I was trying to find.

I agree, bad is way too strong of a term. He was certainly one of the better of his time.

:)

Source on that? I'm pretty much the Beatles fanatic and I _never_ heard that one. And most things I've read say that the other Beatles did consider Ringo a better drummer than Pete Best.

12. Years ago I read somewhere that while Ringo was technically inferior,
he was a natural with the shuffle beat. Of course that may be a little like Dylan's answer to the question, "What did you do different from your earlier albums in Nashville Skyline?" His answer-"Well I guess I did do more songs in 'F'."

I could say something about has-beens and gonna-bes, but this is just best to let it speak for itself.

Score one for Oasis.
