My Med Student Daughter Won a Fulbright!!
Edited on Thu Mar-24-05 02:17 PM by tblue37
Do you remember when everyone was so amazed at how brilliant John Kerry’s daughter Vanessa must be to win a Fulbright Fellowship to do research in England when she was a second-year medical student at Stanford University?

Well, my little daughter, who is a second-year med student at Georgetown, just won a Fulbright Fellowship to do a year of research in Ireland! In the letter she got today telling her she had won the fellowship, it said that of those who have won Fulbright’s to Ireland, 35 of them are Nobel Prize winners! These Fulbrights really do go to the crème de la crème.

And the reason she applied is that I read about Vanessa Kerry’s Fulbright on Smirking Chimp and DU, so I told her to check to see whether she might be eligible for one. She barely made the deadline for applying, too, so were it not for SC and DU, she never even would have known about her eligibility in time to apply!

My nephew is a freshly-minted MD specializing in Radiology (Harvard Medical School - class of 2004) He is currently serving a 1-year internship at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Watertown, MA. Next stop for him is a 4-year residency at Columbia-Presbyterian, including the Cornell Hospital for Special Surgery.

Again, congratulations are in order for your daughter. G*d Bless!

15. Radiology?
That's a great specialty!

My girl is looking at a few different possibilities:

emergency pediatrics
trauma surgery
orthopedic surgery

Orthopedic surgery is very much a boy's club, though, and that is a bit of a problem for a young woman starting out in any field.

Her research proposal concerns the child welfare laws in Ireland. They were drastically revamped a few years ago. If you have read Angela's Ashes or any other book about how children fared in Ireland a few decades ago, you know child welfare was not in the forefront of policy.

But they have made so much progress in recent years that my daughter wants to study how they made such a rapid turnaround, and whether their success might serve as a mdoel for other countries. She plans to write a book about her research.

She loves to travel and learn about other cultures. She did two different study-abroads as an undergrad: she did a semester in London, taking humanities courses, and also one studying primate ecology in the Costa Rican rainforest. In fact, she just got back from a 2-week trip to Africa.

Her summer job last year was as a waitress in a pub in Dublin (or as she likes to say, as a "bar wench").

Although she was a biology/premed major and a math and chemistry minor as an undergrad, she is also very steeped in literature, philosophy, history, and other such subjects. (She is my daughter, after all.)

19. With this girl,

maybe not. She is the kind of person who is always looking for opportunities to expand her horizons and to make a difference. Each time she does something, I expect it will be the biggie, but then she turns around and does something even better. She amazes me sometimes.

Becky is very much focused on the welfare of children. That's why she chose this research project, and also why she is considering emergency pediatrics as a specialty. She is now thinking that this Fulbright might lead to some sort of government job when she is a doctor, and that such a role might make it possible for her to have a positive influence on our benighted attitude toward children in this country.

If she is able to have an impact on changing our country's treatment of children's issues, then she will see this Fulbright as a step toward something even more important.
