it's a tough choice, but I think Jane Austen's collected works beats out - just barely - The Story of Civilization, because while the latter is technically one book, it comes in multiple volumes.

And a lot of paper.

Probably 'The Lord of the Rings' for comfort and 'Ulysses' for challenge. Need a bit of both, y'know. I bet by the time I was rescued I'd be able to speak both Elvish languages with a terrible fin-de-siecle Dublin accent.
