As a film lover, I say: thank goodness for Woody Allen.
This weekend, I saw the trailer for Woody's new film, "Melinda and Melinda". I'm very much looking forward to seeing it. Hollywood seems to turn out comedies that are either just plain unfunny or moronic to the extreme. Woody Allen consistently makes smart, funny comedies that are welcomed and appreciated. Woody Allen has a distinguished body of work...both comedies and dramas.

2. I love Deconstructing Harry.
They play it all the time on IFC and I always watch it. Kirstie Alley is a hoot in that movie..

8. Maybe I need to see that again.
I love love love Woody Allen, but the rampant misogyny in that movie really pissed me off.

18. it was probably intentional for satirical reasons..
I would never take anything by him literal. I just loved the characters in that movie. I don't mind fiction being extreme as long as it isn't blatent political propaganda(rightwing). To be honest I never noticed the misogyny but If i watch it again I will look for it.

14. My favorite Woody Allen film is "Annie Hall"
Although "Hannah and Her Sisters" is a very close second. :-)

but I like his movies anyway. I love Purple Rose of Cairo. That one always puts a smile on my face. I love Annie Hall too.

5. I read that the new one
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 09:42 AM by tigereye
was more in the vein of his earlier stuff. I hope that is true, since I haven't liked the last few he made nearly as well. Deconstructing Harry had some good points to make, Small Time Crooks was funny, but I hated Curse of the Jade Scorpion. I thought Helen Hunt was terrible.

9. His last movie, Hollywood Ending, was one of the five worst...
...movies I've seen in a theater.

19. Oh yeah. I'm still salty about having seen that movie.
I really like a half-dozen of Allen's movies. But, man, Hollywood Ending was a stinker.

6. He should include Judy Davis in his casts more often.
She's hilarious and great.

I like Woody's films, too. The past few years he seems to have opted for "flavor(s) of the month" when it comes to casting though. Not a complaint, just an observation. :-)

7. Very few directors can claim the resume he can. Plus he was
ahead of his time. People are still making films that are influenced by Zelig.

11. I LOVE old Woody Allen, but haven't seen a good
film from him in years. I've found most of the stuff he's done in the last ten years or so to be unwatchable.

He's done some great work though. My faves:

Annie Hall
Love and Death
Hannah and Her Sisters
Manhattan
Radio Days

16. r.e. Love & Death
My wife and I still laugh at the following line (and I'm using an arbitrary name, since I can't recall the character's name):

Diane Keaton: Where's Dmitry?
Woody Allen: He's gone. He was bayonetted to death by a Polish conscientious objecter.

----------------

And in Annie Hall, the Christopher Walken with a deathwish bit was really funny.

17. yeah the early ones are great!
I think it would be ok for him to mine new territory and not have the expectation that there always has to be humor in his films. I wonder if part of it is audience expectation?

Or is it like Bob Dylan getting so much flack for his "gospel" period? Well, no, actually Bob made some beautiful music at that time.

13. The last Woody Allen movie I dug was "Broadway Danny Rose..."
In fact, that's my favorite of all his films.

The guy is undeniably a great filmmaker, though. And he can jam his ass off on the clarinet!

21. Sundance Channel has been showing "Zelig" this month.
Or maybe it was IFC, but whatever, it's not just a technically brilliant film, it cracks my ass up every time, and I've seen it at least a couple dozen times by now.

He's a dirty old man who seduced his step daughter. I can't get that out of my mind.
