Can Hollywood PLEASE make an original film?
Edited on Tue Mar-22-05 08:05 PM by sasquatch
Why are they remaking classics? They're classics they don't need to be remade, leave the damn things alone.

1. Executives are creatively bankrupt and studios are scared shitless
about trying anything new, fearing that they'll lose money. Funny thing is, a lot of remakes bomb.

3. I would gladly sacrifice special effects...
for an original storyline. I want stories, not special effects or superstars. Now, if they could combine the three I'd be happy, but they seem to depend on "splash" more than content. Has Hollywood just run out of imagination?

6. Corporate mentality
There's no room for creative genius because creative genius always goes against conventional conservative thinking and the business leaders of the studios are conservative, conventional thinkers who shy away from anything that smacks of quality, because it's "risky". Insetad they go the "safe" route of rehashing garbage that nobody wants to watch. That's what happens when bean counters call the creative shots. The truly good films come from the indie's who don't have enough bean counters to ruin the process.

15. I understand that
Most writers and film makers are inspired by other artist but the good one's films and literature isn't completely plagerized by another writer.

21. I like the part where they hit a large gong or cymbal
Before Pharoah makes some pronouncement and then he finishes with "So let it be written, so let it be done." I used to go around saying that, annoying my siblings.

13. Republicans screw economy, Hollywood loses its balls.
Hollywood can't waste any money on unknown entities, as the economy is in the crapper and they can only go with the sure thing.

Comic books, novels, and older films have proven track records. This is also the reason for the recent sequel mania.

Big stars have shown they can pull in the money--so if Tom Cruise wanted to do a picture where he sits reading the phone book to John Travolta, they could do it.

That's it. When a Democrat is president, look for everyone in Hollywood to take a cleansing breath and try to come up with some new stuff.

18. Like everything else, it comes and goes in waves.
I'm always against bad remakes, but you can't fault a director or actor for wanting a shot at a classic. It's like performing a role on the stage that's been done for generations.

Some classics are remakes themselves: Scrooge (A Christmas Carol), with Alistair Sim, was the sixth version; Ben Hur, third version; The Maltese Falcon, third version. I wouldn't have missed these for anything.

I agree we're in the middle of a big slump in good films; I haven't gone out to the movies in months. The last two films I saw were biopics: "Ray" and "Beyond the Sea".

What bothers me more than remakes, though, are movies made about every freakin' comic book character in creation (especially those I either never read or just flat out do not know.) That, and movies based on cheesy TV shows from my childhood.

27. It's corporate control of the studios and Hollywood.
Edited on Wed Mar-23-05 10:41 AM by terrya
The people who are running the studios now are fucking bankers who could care less about films. It's ALL box office now. I know it's a business and always has been...but in the early days of Hollywood, people like Louis B. Mayer and Jack Warner actually cared about the movies. The people today could care less about them.

Remakes and movies based on television shows are seen as moneymakers. Thus, that's what we're given.
