How come some dogs disappear after a month or two?

How come some dogs disappear after a month or two?
No not mine. But I have met a couple of people who live out in the country and when they put the dog out, he's just out with no fence or yard... sometimes they come back and sometimes they don't!

2. Could be any number of reasons.
I let my dogs run. I live in a very rural area and haven't had any trouble. Its been over two years and they stay pretty close to the house. My guess is these people only had one or two dogs. Lone dogs do not fair well if attacked by coyotee's. Also, if these people live near other people with livestock they may have been shot for attacking the stock. If I shot a dog for doing this I would inform the owner but some people may not.
