This is my 5000th post
Thank you. Thank you very much.
John
I may not have said anything very interesting, but I sure have said a hell of a lot of it.

2. It seems like it's taken forever
But, when I looked it up, it's only taken since the beginning of the 21st Century.
John
Time flies when you're having fun.

4. Well sure
Like I have anything better to do for the next 13 months.
John
This place pisses me off sometimes (though I'm aware it pisses all of us off at one time or another -- kind of like life itself), but I don't know what I'd do without it. And I know I'd have crazy gone nuts re: pResident Dopey without a large, mostly sympatico group to fight with and beside.

7. I was at 4975 two weeks ago
Between the renovations upstairs (rebuilding the library) and the run to Martin (MSchreader)'s house in Detroit for my birthday festivities, it's taken, like, forever.
John
Now I will just recede back into the woodwork for awhile. Thanks for the congrats.

9. Congratulations, John!
How many of those were with the Dude-style taglines?

I can't remember when you adopted it. :)

I hope I'll reach 5000 posts some day. I'm sure I can make it there, it'll just take a while, seeing how I just reached 2000.

-CollegeDude
Here's to 5000 more! :toast:

11. I don't remember -- but I adopted it real early (say, before post 500)
And I completely stole it from you. How are things at the University of Maryland? Well, I hope (what are you majoring in, anyhow?).
John
Did I ever mention that my mom and dad were married in Baltimore (June 1951, 48 hours before dad was shipped out from Fort Holabird, enroute to what he thought was going to be Korea -- but turned out to be downtown Tokyo)?

12. Better than they have been
I was in a bit of a funk last year. I was in a 2nd-year computer science class and sitting there I kept thinking to myself, "This isn't how I want to spend my life." That kind of dragged me down for a little while. By a little while I mean several months, which kind of sucked.

But then I reached a sort of epiphany some time and I decided that I wanted to change majors to political science. So that's what I did, and that's now what I'm majoring in. I don't know exactly what I want to do with the degree or anything... I just know that it's something I'd like to do.

I have more friends who are on campus this year, people I've actually made friends with by talking to them - social interaction with unfamiliar people's never been my strong suit, but I'm getting better.

All in all I'm excited to get to study something that will hopefully let me make a difference in the world.

I don't remember you ever mentioning that about your parents. Baltimore lives up to its nickname of Charm City, I guess. Though, I don't even know if it had that nickname in 1951, now that I think about it.

How have things been going with you?

-CollegeDude
Needs to learn his local history, apparently

18. Oh, yeah -- it was Charm City then, too
My mom took the B and O to Baltimore from Saginaw (she lived right next door to where I live now) on about two hours notice. She got off the train at Union Station and got picked up by a very nice cabbie who, upon finding out that she still had some three or four hours until dad got off-duty, took her to nearly every bar between the station and Fort Holabird.
Mom was 20 at the time -- totally underage. The cabbie let the bar folks know she was there to get married to her soldier boy in the Counterintelligence Corps (HQed at Holabird), and the nice people of Baltimore bought her round after round after round. Mom got dropped off, more or less toasted, at the post and dad, seeing her condition, was totally pissed off.
The wedding went on at the Post Chapel the following day, anyhow. Mom looked great in the wedding photo (though I'm sure she was quite hung over -- looking at the photo just now, she DOES look a bit squinty-eyed), they got exactly one night of what I reckon was connubial bliss in Ocean City, before dad drove some officer's Pontiac cross-country to Seattle to his Point of Embarkation.
He was gone for the next two years -- most of which time mom spent in Baltimore. She always spoke very highly of the city and its people right up until her death in 1994 and, to this day, I still picture B'more as some sort of Oz.
John
Things are just dandy with me. At 47, after two heart attacks, I find that any day I can still get vertical for is an excellent day. Wish I'd known that ten years and one or two marriages ago. Too soon old, too late smart, I guess.

15. Yeah
About two days out of three, I'm just reading -- not posting.
Sometimes I just don't feel like saying anything. Other days, I feel like anything I say is just going to stir stuff up.
I'm probably more sensitive than I let on (shoot -- I darned near HAVE to be) -- so I lurk. It's not just for newbies anymore.
John
I hate fighting (though I'm all too good at it), unless it's with my old buddy, Andy the Right Wing Republican.

19. Hey, don't fight the feeling
I got to use the line "I was born in Saginaw, Michigan" in the "Where Were You Born" thread earlier tonight.
John
Which is true. So were Serena Williams, musicians Stevie Wonder and Sonny Stitt, and cowboy actor Tim McCoy (whose dad was the Chief of Police here). It is, after all, The Center of the Universe (but I've already said that).

It's a load of driving from Indy to Saginaw. I'll probably be seeing Marty this wknd (he was supposed to call today re: all that, but didn't), and I'll be sure to pass along your regards (though I suspect he'll note this thread before then).
John
I know he can read. I'm not totally sure he can operate a telephone.

You have ten times the posts I do and they never fail to be encouraging and uplifting. You're a rock.

Me? I'm unimportant in the grand scheme here at DU, but I always vote Democratic (it's a family tradition) -- which is all anyone can or should ask for. Oh, and I throw a Big Ass Party (FUNDAY) every June. All DUers (and Andy the Right Wing Republican, too, for that matter) are invited.
Thank you for all you do for this place, ny.
