Film star Newman plans retirement
BBC

Hollywood veteran Paul Newman wants to retire from acting after his next film.

The 80-year-old star, who has had 10 Oscar nominations during his career, said he was "winding down" his acting and his other passion, motor racing.

He wanted to make another film "for good luck" - and it may be a reunion with his Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid co-star Robert Redford, he said.

"We've been looking for something for 20 years and now we're looking harder. I hope something will come of it."

5. That was always Newman's big advantage as an actor
Newman always looked a lot younger than he actually was. He would have been a great actor in any case (and I mean a great actor, not merely a good one), but his youthful looks allowed him to play characters ten or fifteen younger. The actor had the advantage of perspective and wisdom over his character. Newman knew when his character was being foolish. His art was to let the audience in on it without making the audience think that the character was aware of it.

Observe Newman's performances in The Hustler, Hud and Cool Hand Luke -- those are his best, in my opinion -- to see this aspect of his acting.

3. redford told a story about a practical joke between the 2
on inside the actors studio. made me wish i was really rich.
on his birthday, shortly after he started racing, redford got a smashed up porche, with a giant red bow, and had it delivered to newman's house. had it hoisted up onto his back porch. no card, nothing.
a short time later, redford came home to find a 3' cube of crushed steel, sitting in his foyer, putting a 1/2" dent in his marble floor. again, no card, no note.
so he sent it out, had it melted down, and turned into a piece of outdoor sculpture, which he surreptitiously had planted in newman's garden.
the funny thing about the story, to me, was that neither man ever said ONE WORD to the other about the prank. no way i would ever have such control.
i hope newman is going to run against holy joe, although 80 is pretty old. but if he is just now giving up driving race cars, what the heck.

10. he used to drive
he owns cars, but he also has driven. and is a very good driver. i think he is just now giving that up.
it also is a sign of having a lot of money. i can't imagine anyone i know not killing him for ruining the floor.

6. I'd love to see another Butch and Sundance movie.
The first one brings back a lot of memories. Where does he have racing teams? What circuit?

Don't forget, the guy makes a mean salad dressing too. He's got a lot of irons in the fire.

7. rumored...A Walk in the Woods...
by Bill Bryson...sounds like a great project - 2 old friends hiking the Appalian Trail & have some adventures...the banter between them is perfect...

Redford is so slow to get projects going but an 80 yr old might speed him up...time is runnning out!!!
