OK computer/FBI professionals. I sent a note to CNN about how pathetic their coverage was concerning the refusal to give Clinton's money during whitewater and impeachment and Bush and the Iraq lies and no impeachment. They wrote back something about thank you and recorded my IP address. What does this mean? Why was it significant for them to note it.
On a beign level, to record an ip address means they know who you are and that you're legitimate. Each computer on the internet has it's own IP address. Just a way to double check that a real person sent the email.
On a sinister note, they know for sure who is against the current government. They don't need to worry about an email address from someone who doesn't exist. They can go right to the source.
Important question: why do they tell you that? I suspect they have to for legal reasons.
