What happened to all the great musicals?
Singing in the Rain, South Pacific, Sound of Music, Showboat, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady and the list continues. Why don't we have music films like this anymore? Or, do I live in the past?

3. Simple answer: Hollywood refuses to focus on anything but the bottom line
Bollywood makes lots, but it'll be a while before any studios will bank on many here.

There was that one a few years ago... Moulin Rouge. It did alright.

4. one word... CHICAGO
the latest GREAT movie musical.

but, to answer your question... without great musicals ON BROADWAY... there aren't likely to be great MOVIE musicals.

only SINGING in the RAIN, from your list, originated as a MOVIE.

p.s. you forgot GYPSY!

5. Well, Rock and Roll killed the music genre they were based upon

and production costs and the corporate mentality made productions risk averse.

And Andrew Lloyd Weber proved that you don't need real talent and innovation, just do the same spetacular crap all over again.

8. :)
Just kidding. I've just never really been a fan, not even of the "great" ones.

I did like Moulin Rouge, though.

I'm more of an opera fan myself.
