Live grenade left on coffee shop counter

A Miami cafeteria worker opening for business Tuesday morning made a disturbing discovery: a hand grenade atop an outside counter where customers are usually served their coffee.

The Opportunity Cafeteria, in a strip mall at 950 NW 36th St., had just opened at around 6:30 a.m. when the unidentified worker found the grenade. They called police.

The pin was still in the grenade, keeping it from exploding. A Miami police bomb squad detonated it.

''The employee got the customers waiting for the cafeteria to open to get away from the grenade,'' said Delrish Moss, a police spokesman.

Investigators were trying to determine Tuesday how the grenade got there.

Moss called it ''very unusual'' for a grenade to be found by citizens.
