NEW FOOTBALL POLL OUT!
New ESPN-USA TODAY Poll is out.
Changes in the Top 25 are numerous after the bizarre weekend. Oklahoma widens its lead as #1 - surprised there are even 5 votes for Miami. I think the top 2 in this poll will be in the Sugar Bowl and it will be an all-time great game.

Here's the top 10:

1. OKLAHOMA (58) 6-0 1,570 1
2. MIAMI FLA (5) 6-0 1,514 2
3. VIRGINIA TECH 6-0 1,452 4
4. USC 5-1 1,334 9
5. GEORGIA 5-1 1,333 10
6. WASHINGTON ST 5-1 1,108 12
7. FLORIDA ST 5-1 1,086 5
8. OHIO ST 5-1 1,065 3
9. IOWA 5-1 981 15
10. LSU 5-1938 6

1. I don't like the BCS system
I wish that NCAA would instead go to a system that it has for basketball. I think there should be a football tournament.

2. Would take too long
Since football teams can only play once a week, and there are so many more college than pro teams--we'd be watching both NCAA championship tournaments at the same time! Well, maybe not quite, but it would take forever.

4. Well, you certaintly can't take 64 teams like they do in hoops,
but an 8 team tourny is doable.

7. The Way I've seen the Proposals
Edited on Sun Oct-12-03 04:51 PM by JasonBerry
It wouldn't lengthen the season at all. In fact, there is a built-in break between the last games and the first bowl -- and then all the bowls are spread out over a month. It's a totally wasted time for most of the top teams who must wait sometimes 5 weeks to play the bowl game. There is time to take the top 4 teams in the polls and seed #1 against #4 and #2 against #3 and then a title game.

3. AMEN!
I agree 100%. It's the only fair system and we wouldn't hear all the whining every year -- they would have to prove it on the field instead of all the politics with the BCS and the bowl games.

28. The regular season is a tournament system
You lose two games you don't deserve a shot, with a playoff system it is possible for a 3 loss team to win the NC, how are they the best team when the loss 3 games? Besides the NCAA Tournament isn't perfect, many people thought Boston College, Wyoming, Texas Tech, and others should've been in there.

6. Ohio State is lucky to be eighth.
I thought they'd be lower than that.

I think FSU should have dropped lower, too. They looked very bad against Miami. I know - I know. Wisconsin is no Miami. But FSU really got their asses handed to them at home. The final score is not indicative of how the game played out. FSU just looked bad to me.

25. Actually OSU is not quite out of it
Okay wishful thinking I know and the BCS #'s could change this but:

Oklahoma (not that anyone will beat them IMHO) still has Missouri,Colorado, A&M, and Texas Tech left plus the big 12 championship game

Miami is AT Va.Tech, hosts Tennessee, and AT Pittsburgh

Va.Tech (overrated hasn't played anyone yet)At WVU, Miami at home, at Pittsburgh, at TEMPLE :bounce: , BC at home, at UVa (no one knows who will show up for the Hoos)

So Either Miami or Tech will be out as they play each other.

USC at ND, at Washington, Hosts Wash. State (another cancel out game)and well UCLA,. The Trojans win over a hard charging Auburn team is really going to help them.

Washington State-At USC and AT Washington

OSU has
Iowa (3) Columbus, OH
Indiana Bloomington, IN
Penn State University Park, PA
Michigan State Columbus, OH
Purdue Columbus, OH
Michigan Ann Arbor, MI

Georgia is AT Florida  and at Ga. Tech and has the SEC championship were anything can happen

Fla. State is at UVa, has Wake (playing very well) at home, at ND, at Clemson, hosts NC State, and at Florida

10. I just thought of something....
Edited on Sun Oct-12-03 04:58 PM by JasonBerry
Looking at the AP poll.....WHEN was the last time that 61 of 64 of the sports writers had a solid number one pick and only two teams having first place votes? Thinking over the least few seasons - I can't think of a time. They are usually pretty spread among the top five, but with so many upsets this year only TWO teams with #1 votes and Oklahoma with 61/64......wow. Interesting season.

23. Shows you need a play-off system
I was thinking 8 teams, but maybe 16 since Florida State will probably be ranked #8 with 8 losses, and the #9 team will get shut out.

14. Which Will Probably Happen
I just looked and Oklahoma STATE (!) is ranked 24th! Texas probably will lose again. I watched Miami kick FSU yesterday and then kept it on to watch Oklahoma destroy Texas. Is OU that good? Or, is Texas that bad? It looked to me like nobody's beatin' the Sooners this year. So, which is it?

15. I'm a Sooner fan and OU is pretty darn good this year
Jason White(QB) is playing lights out and the defense could be the best that Stopps has coached at OU. I still thinks OU's running game is marginal.

As for Texas.........

Jason White looked phenomenal. He is as accurate a QB as I've seen in a long time. I had seen the clips on the sports shows, but to see him play is amazing. He is so consistent and makes it look easy. I heard ESPN say this morning that he will jump to the top of the Heisman race. I'd say it looks like you're backing a winner this year.

Edit: To spell right......duh.....lazy Sunday

18. I guess you heard the story on Jason White
Edited on Sun Oct-12-03 06:43 PM by RedEarth
Knee injuries the last two years. Takes a lot of dedication to come back after two blown out knees. Not sure if you caught his stats...17/21, 290+/- yards, 4 tds, had one pass dropped that would have been a td and only through 4 passes in the second half. The players on the team really like and respect White and the o line will do anything to keep him from getting hit.

19. I was going to say...
The offensive line is TOUGH. That defense is pretty much a wall. I HAVE heard White's story - they were talking about it this morning. Kiper said that the pros are watching him carefully as he used some new surgical technique that QB's had never used before. If he holds up and chooses not to go back to OU (they said the NCAA would almost surely give him a medical exception) then he could be a high pick even with the knees because of the new surgery. I was impressed.

20. OK State is an extremely dangerous team.
They should have beaten Texas last year in Austin and they have beaten OU two years running. Rashaun Woods is probably the best receiver in the nation. They could be serious contenders for the Big XII South this year.

21. OK State is a real good team
and they are always up and well coached for the OU game. They have a very good QB and Woods is an All American receiver. Both of those players chewed up OU last year. It will be a very tough game.

27. Oh jeez. Hawkeyes 9th! (Bad omen)
Every time the Hawks crack the top ten, they lose! They've had two weeks off after their glorious, improbably upset against Michigan. Now they face OSU, who will be angry. I'm afraid, very afraid...

they moved up in the bye week. It would be nice if they could get another bye, move up another 3, might bypass the top 10 jinx.

Go Hawks

30. If anyone can beat OU in the BCS they deserve to be National Champions.
Probably the winner of the Miami\Va.Tech game will get the chance to be steamrolled at the Sugar Bowl this year.
