I've wondered about that ever since reading Joe Bageant's stories, with lots of references to Winchester residents.

A good example:

Thanks for the link. Winchester is outside the Greater DC "prosperity zone" including No. VA, MD burbs of DC, and most of DC. Fun huh, we limit our prosperity to economic "hot zones" and then wonder why the rest of the country believes in "creationism" and *.

15. In Kentucky a Similar Situation Exists
The majority of new economic development in the state occurs within the 'Golden Triangle,' roughly bounded by Louisville, Northern Kentucky (KY's Cincinnati suburbs), and Lexington. The city where I live (well to the west of the Golden Triangle) has had a static population for over 20 years.

21. Pretty dumb way to run a country, huh. Our gov is changing that in VA
Warner, he really understands the issue (I'm a Clarkie but I like Warner a lot). We're named the best run state in the union and that's ALL John Warner (Gilmore, his predecessor, ran a Ken Lay style government).

sitting around on their computers. Some doing work, others having fun. If you go to Starbucks, at least around here, you have to join T-Mobile Hot something (not a cult, a cell service) and then you log on and use it for free. This place is an independent. You just haul out your laptop and connect, no charge. They beat the pants off of Starbucks with this competitive advantage. I don't go there often to use the internet, but when I do, it's cool, nice place, laid back...
