Proverbs 13:24
"He that spareth his rod hateth his son."

I am not really a big fan of spanking. I always thought that it was bullshit. Occasionally, it might be called for, but I think that it is counterproductive most of the time. What are your thoughts on it?

3. Not real big on biblical arguments to support ANY position, because...

..inevitably interpretation comes to mind.

One religious group claims it's about spanking and the other says it's an allegory for the rod of the shepherd to "guide" his flock.

Or the "eye of the needle" thing which has like 3 different interpretations:

a) Literally
b) A small gate
c) mistranslation of the word "rope"

5. I think the sooner
we get away from quoting the Bible as some sort of an authority on anything, the quicker we'll start making some real progress in this world.

I'd like to think that we as a society can move beyond parenting tips from the Bronze Age.

Arlington, Mass. -- To raise a child, one needs three invaluable allies: the Bible, the help of an extended family and "biblical-based resources" -- 9-inch-long spanking paddles of blue polyurethane, according to Steve Haymond from Bakersfield, who sells the paddles online for $6.50 apiece.

Twyla Bullock, in Eufaula, Okla., swears by the Rod -- a 22-inch, $5 white nylon whipping stick her husband designed and produced until recently. Named after the biblical "rod of correction," the Rod provides "a faith-based way to discipline children ... and train them as Christians," Bullock explains.

"Corporal punishment, when used lovingly and properly, is beneficial to a child because it is in harmony with nature itself," Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, which claims a mailing list of 2.5 million believers, wrote on the organization's Web site (www.family.org).

Joey Salvati, a carpenter from New Kingston, Pa., and a father of two, has been crafting wooden spanking paddles since 2002. The $5.75 implements come with a suggestion as to the number of swats for various childhood misdemeanors: one for disrespectful behavior, two for cursing, three for cheating, lying or "direct defiance."

...and give them some seriously fucked-up sexuality issues...don't these people know what sort of twisted perversion the caning in British public schools has led to?

Singapore Caning Victim Arrested

WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) -- The young man who was caned in Singapore four years ago for allegedly vandalizing cars has been arrested in Florida on drug charges.

Michael Fay, 22, was arrested at his apartment Tuesday by a deputy responding to neighbors' complaints about loud music.

12. I take that quote to mean discipline--I can't spank.
Many Old Testament quotes can be problematic.

But anyway, I *swatted* once, and won't do it anymore. It says "I have run out of ways to deal with this and now I'm impatient and you're getting it". IMO.

My parents spanked me every blue moon...didn't like it, but I'm not eternally scarred either. I do think they didn't have an alternative way of handling what I'd done.
