I *love* this movie and watch it whenever it's on - I think I've seen it 15 times. Great quote too!

Edit: I was also born AFTER it was filmed, so it's not a generational thing!

"It's my happening and it freaks me out" is a direct lift from BtVotD.

On the other hand, I can understand. It's certainly an acquired taste.

I worked with Bruce Vilanch, who basically did the screenplay and went on to do lots of Hollywood comedy for people like Bette Midler and the Oscars. I also worked with John McHugh, who played the bartender, a reporter originally from Ireland. The big kinda unkempt guy.

On edit: I also have played poker with Roger Ebert. And won.

3. Here's a "cute" review of the movie from Amazon. A different Gen's Take
but, I'll go with it! ;-)

Reviewer: A viewer from PA United States

For those who love to hate Valley of the Dolls, keep in mind no one was trying to surpass Citizen
Kane so it isn't going to be oozing with cerebral content. Chill out people. Remember, this was
1967--back then, the movie was shocking. By our standards today, hardly (do we even have the
ability to be shocked anymore?). Yet this movie continues to have some sublime impact on me.
Does it hit me everytime I reach for my bottle of Tylenol PM?. haha No--maybe it's the standard
premise--3 woman, initially innocents, who happen upon success, failure & how each chooses a
different way to handle their dilemmas (& they have their share!). Common demoninator--drugs.
Therein lies the realistic portion of the flick--it was the early days of Valium, etc consumption &
does paint a true picture in this arena. Valley of the Dolls is what it's supposed to be--simple
entertainment. I never fail to reach for Kleenex at the end. Theme song is moving, the story--one
could call it trash, one could call it soap opera but I call it so much fun! Patty Duke gives the
standout performance, along with Susan Hayward. Sharon Tate is exquisite. A perfect physical
specimen if not the greatest actress of our time; her performance in V of the D's should be
appreciated. Probably the most disturbing part of Valley of the Dolls is the knowledge of the tragic
end to Tate's brief life. Costuming--hey, this is really most delightful! Everything is back in style.
Check out the wardrobe. These styles are on the racks again! My only complaint with the film is
the poor selection of male actors. Their performances are bland, at best. If anything drags the
movie down, it's them. Watch Valley of the Dolls for it is pleasing in many respects. Great way to
spend an afternoon--camp out with some popcorn & Kleenex and enjoy this Camp classic!

That was when this horrid piece of ennui was new. I'm older now and the only way I'd watch it
again is at the point of a gun. Maybe that's what hell is: being forced to watch movies such as
Valley of the Dolls throughout eternity.

I love that one! Bad stuff.
Personally, I love this movie (for camp value).
I thought Patty Duke was awful in it and loved when the catfight broke out in the bathroom and the old broad's wig got flushed.
Awful stuff! Makes me giggle almost as much as "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?", except Baby Jane was better!

18. Lyrics
Gotta get off, gonna get
Have to get off from this ride
Gotta get hold, gonna get
Need to get hold of my pride
When did I get, where did I
How was I caught in this game
When will I know, where will I
How will I think of my name
When did I stop feeling sure, feeling safe
And start wondering why, wondering why
Is this a dream, am I here, where are you
What's in back of the sky, why do we cry
Gotta get off, gonna get
Off of this merry-go-round
Gotta get off, gonna get
Need to get on where I'm bound
When did I get, where did I
Why am I lost as a lamb
When will I know, where will I
How will I learn who I am
Is this a dream, am I here, where are you
Tell me, when will I know, how will I know
When will I know why?
When will I know why...

just some famous quotes from the movie. It's quite a cult/camp favorite.
on edit:
It actually was made into a very funny musical stage production that played here in Seattle. Some of those lines are so bad they will live forever...

24. Okay, got it......glad you were a fan...if you were. Sounds like you
were, if you remember the specific lines from the movie. I remember the more "romantic view" as a person of the era, who wasn't into drugs. (most of my generation wasn't..hard to believe but true). Often there's a disconnect...if one doesn't pick out the specifics.

Thanks!

Edited on Sat Oct-11-03 08:45 PM by KoKo01
I figured there was enough commonality. But, others might identify Rush more with Cobain or Belushi, but at least we all know, if you need to be on drugs....pick those "pain killers" because at least they don't find you a couple of days later dead in your own......well, whatever!

Should we have more sympath because he wasn't mainlining heroin or snorting coke?

I don't know. How did he get "Up" enough to do his show. Pail killers are zonkers, usually.

I wonder if there isn't more to this. What was his "upper?"

Helen Lawson: You oughtta know. You just got out of the nuthouse.

Neely O'Hara: It was NOT a NUTHOUSE!

I remember when that movie came out. It was right after the riots in DC, and the downtown area was turning into a ghost town. All of the grand old movie palaces were closing down or switching to porn. Valley of the Dolls opened at the Loew's Palace for an exclusive first-run, and 52 weeks later it was still playing to a packed house, and it kept on bringing in the crowds for a long time thereafter.
