Poll question: BBC America Comedy Poll
Edited on Thu Mar-03-05 06:22 PM by sasquatch
Tonight is the night they run the British comedies and Dylan Moran's show "Black Books" and it's my favorite British comedy as of right now. I'll add Monty Python because we know that's what most DUers love.

1. The Office and Coupling!
Edited on Thu Mar-03-05 06:22 PM by NewHampshireDem
Two of the funniest shows *ever* on television. I like MP, but if I want to really laugh out loud, Coupling is the ticket. On the other hand, if I want to snicker uncontrollably hours later (Gareth Keenean Investigates ), then it is The Office.

2. I love Trailer Park boys as well
When they robbed the food mart so they could have something to eat at the wedding.
"Dammit, you're making bubbles cry."
:D

4. I've never watched more than 5 minutes of that show.
 I'm not quite sure why.

30. Me too!
We (the US) slaughtered Coupling awhile back, and now we appear to be trying to kill The Office as well. Oh boy. I don't have very high hopes, even though the hilarious guy from Anchorman is going to be the boss. "LOUD NOISES!"

Did Coupling ever get past the birth? I can't seem to catch any new episodes!

3. "Trailer Park Boys" is on BBC America? !
Neither BBC not American. Discuss.

And, why isn't "Manchild" on this poll?

6. I don't really like Manchild
It's nothing but a bunch of middle age men sleeping around town, and that pisses me off because it's not like that in reality.

10. Oh, but I think that's not entirely true.
The fact is a bunch of middle aged men can sleep around town if they've got Aston Martins, country homes, and Mayfair lofts.

Think of it as a "sex in the city" for men... their sexual power comes from their wealth, and, to a (much) lesser degree, their 'worldliness' (notice how most of the women they date are young enough to have daddy complexes, and are usually overwhelmed by which fork to use, modern art investment, etc).

Look at the one where Gary (the fat guy with the Cockney wife) meets that stripper. Of course she calls him, and he, she, his friends, and the audience know why; because he's a rich guy. He knows that...but it doesn't lessen the experience of having a beautiful, exotic woman call you on your cell.

Ultimately, the're extremely insecure about their impending mortality, but they can buy themselves some comfort and live in the artificial present.

"Do these pants make my ass look big?"

13. That's why I hate that show
All the middle aged men I know that are single have kids and broken houses. I wont ever be able to live that lifestyle and if I did I'd have more STD's than your average street walker.

16. See...that's why I'm loving it so much right now
(I have them all on tape).

As a 37 year old, childless, newly divorced male, I HAVE to believe there's some truth to the reward of such shallow pursuits.

There just HAS to be...

Right...?

8. Black Books was the best chioce offered, BUT:
How could you not mention "The Kumars at #42"?
I don't care WHO you are, that's FUNNY right there!

Also, "Goodness Gracious Me"? Sporadic, but generally funny, occasionally BRILLIANT.

18. The 'grandmother' on Kumars is a GGM alumn!
Check the credits!

That GGM sketch with the Indian backpackers touring Britian was the funnies sketch I've seen in years!

20. I've posted it often. My favorite exchange from the show.
Lister: D'ya think Wilma's sexy?
Cat: Wilma Flintstone?
Lister: Maybe we've been alone in deep space too long, but every time I see that body, it drives me crazy. Is it me?
Cat: Well, I think in all probability, Wilma Flintstone is the most desirable woman that ever lived.
Lister: That's good. I thought I was going strange.
Cat: She's incredible!
Lister: What d'ya think of Betty?
Cat: Betty Rubble? Well, I would go with Betty... but I'd be thinking of Wilma.
Lister: This is crazy. Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?
Cat: You're right. We're nuts. This is an insane conversation.
Lister: She'll never leave Fred, and we know it.

15. MP is a fabulous classic, Black Adder is another..I have not
watched "Trailer Park Boys" yet.

BBCA rotates the comedies fairly regularly, "Thin Blue Line" is very funny and has been on our local PBS station several times, as have other BBC comedies that pop up on BBCA.

Absolutely Fabulous also comes to mind.
