Do Catholic hospitals circumcise baby boys?
-and yes I can feel the copycat coming but I have to ask anyway-

So I am talking with a co-worker and she asks about how my wife is doing. As we are talking she says that she wanted to have her baby at the same Catholic hospital we are planning to have ours at (everyone RAVES about how good it is) and she dropped this on me.

"Well it was three years ago but I had to go to ________ hospital because they (the Catholic hospital) wouldn't circumcise him"

WHAT????

Being "secular" this sort of stuff never even crosses my mind.

I asked my boss, who is Catholic, and he said that they Catholic hospital he was born at did.

I know that this particular hospital (the one we are using) doesn't do vasectomies or (of course) abortions or even prescribe the pill but circumcisions????

Anyone?

1. Yes, they do.
Unless the parents request otherwise.

13. Wait a minute -
Are you saying the parents have to request NOT to have their sons circumcised? I'd think it would be the other way around.

16. I believe parents have to sign a release form....
before the procedure is done. The people I know who have chosen not to circumcise had discussed it with the doctor prior to the birth.

18. I assume release forms are used, which is why I was surprised.
The way your post read it appeared that they circumcise UNLESS the parents request otherwise.

My son is not circumcised, and I didn't have to discuss it with anyone (other than my husband) before his birth.

3. That's odd! I have no idea why any hospital would refuse to allow

a doctor on staff to do the procedure.

8. there's no reason to do it right? I think many years ago they did
it automatically without even asking the parents

6. I doubt they refuse to do circumcisions, especially
given the the (fore)skin is used in the treatment of 3rd-degree burns. Or used to be, anyway; it is/was a good "starter" for skin grafts.

7. I was born in a Catholic hospital and
(looks down) yes I was circumsized.

BTW, did you hear about the rabbi who started a side business? he took the foreskin from all the circumsitons and make wallets. If you rub them they become suitcases.

10. Perhaps they've just decided...
...to join the 21st century and not hack off some of the most erotically sensitive flesh to be found on the male body. You know, some babies experience considerable trauma through the operation, so I'm really glad to be intact.

Now if only the RC church would update itself on some other issues, we'd have a pretty nice world.

17. But then they'd have to question what's been unnecessarily done
to millions of American males.

Underpants, Mr. CornField and I did lots of research on the topic before our son was born. We could find absolutely no medical reason to have this surgical procedure done to our child. I hope that you and your wife will also take time to look into it and come to an informed decision (whatever that might be).

19. Well done! Good for you, for opposing ancient, archaic and wildly nutty
mutilation on your son!

I just can't even imagine doing that to a child.... isn't it crazy????

Some people just don't THINK, I guess, and just do what they're told.

23. I had a friend deliver two sons there,
and they were both circumcised. It might be that the OB wouldn't do it for some reason and that is why she had to go to another hospital.

BTW, it is a great place to have a baby. I know several people who have delivered there and they all had good experiences. I don't know anyone who had a bad experience.

I had my child at a Catholic hospital and was asked if I wanted it done (emphatic NO, by the way...)

22. My brother was born in a Catholic hospital
in 1978. He was circumsized as a matter of course.
When I was pregnant with my daughter, my midwife talked to me about circumcism (just in case the ultrasound was wrong). She stated that some of the newer doctors are now coming out against it and would prefer to teach good foreskin hygiene instead (no this is not a sex thread!) My daughter was born at a community hospital that preformed them but they discouraged them ( I overheard one of the moms talking about it while I was in labor).
Maybe this is the type that now discourages it.

27. Must depend on the hospital
I work in a Catholic Hospital and any parent who wants the baby circumcised can have it done. The problem might actually be that the pediatrician did not want to do the procedure. We even do tubal ligations (ends fertility for mom), but they have to be approved by a committee....I have never seen any request turned down though.

29. As a Catholic born in a public hospital...
I got circumsized. I don't know if the hospital required it, or it was my parent's decision (I'd feel pretty funny asking my parents about the circumstances involving my circumcision). From what I've heard about foreskin and how nasty it can get, I guess I'm happy I don't have foreskin (No, this is not a sex thread!).
