Personally, I think it was a most unnecessary death, and cannot imagine why they felt the need to take this animal from his natural environment. I'm no fan of zoos to begin with, and now even less so. Humans...never can resist getting their mitts on some of nature's wonders, purely for the sake of entertainment and personal satisfaction. -rant over-

Who's to say the reason Bubba was caught now was
because he(?) was already on his way out.

Edited on Wed Mar-02-05 06:59 PM by shance
selfish individuals, who thinks its pretty funny to observe other 'lessers' cruelty when its not their own, even here at DU.

Okay, Im not a total oaf here. Some of the threads are funny. However, take the time to read some of the glorious posts about PETA and how they hate the kindness and courage extended by PETA people and try to distort it as radical.

The only voices Animals have to speak for them is us. Im not trying to be a pollyanna, but have some respect and if you can, try and recognize the Amurikun exploitation of everything as being for SALE and something to create an opportunity out of.

The issue lies with selling everything and making a buck off everything and holding nothing as sacred. Even good ole Bubba. The name Bubba says so much right there. I grew up in the South so to speak, and if that is not a name that demeans this crustacean into a cartoon character I don't know what does. Hes a creature guys. We can put the lobster bib on and get ready for supper and make this some kind of lobster fest, but we just fall into that American trap of CONSUMPTION and it all belongs to US. Cuz were Amurikunz.

Of course its not funny when anything is treated with a lack of respect and is tortured, maimed, beaten, assaulted, or even boiled in any way. Ive had lobster and shell fish, but I don't have lobster any more. Im not blaming others that do, Im just saying, not EVERYTHING is to be eaten, consumed, snorted, inhaled, injected whatever. God almighty.

And, for the most part when we aren't boiling lobsters, we're actually a pretty laid back crew.

Bubba the huge lobster dies at Pittsburgh Zoo
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Bubba, the 23-pound-lobster that got front-page treatment today after a seafood store spared its life, died at about 3 p.m. today at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium.

The cause of death is not yet known, but the lobster did not eat since his transfer yesterday from Wholey's in the Strip District to the aquarium in Highland Park, the zoo announced.

A necropsy will be performed. Bubba, estimated by some to be as old as 100 and by others to be as young as 40, was caught Thursday in the Atlantic Ocean. An animal rights group had asked that the huge crustacean be taken back to the ocean.

they lived that long. I know catfish have a long life too. It makes me sick seeing an old redneck with an 100 pound catfish rotting on the bed of his pickup, while he drives around the country side, drinking beer and showing it off. The sad part about it, they very rarely catch them on pole and line, but usually poach them by hogging.

76. My husband just told me he heard about Bubba on the local news...
He said Wholey's (the fish market) who had Bubba had taken him to the Pittsburgh zoo so it is no surprise that he's dead. When the zoo first opened their new marine section about 5 yrs. ago, they killed everything they had bought to stock it with, water too alkaline or something, someone screwed up and everything died, before the place ever opened to the public. Poor Bubba.
