3. Be sure and pronounce it correctly.
It's not Hum-iss or hum-us. Take the "oo" from 'book', and it's "Hoom-ooss"

Any way you say it, it's scrumptious! :9

5. It sounds like a bodily secretion that should only be spoken of
in the doctor's office. Yes, I've been coughing up a lot of blood-streaked hummus lately.

6. A guy did a double-take one time when I pronounced it properly.
He asked: "Did you just say you liked 'homeless'?"

IT'S FREAKIN' AWESOME!

Try Athenos brand of hummus and buy some pita bread to dip into it. Trust me, you'll love it. It's a Middle Eastern / Mediterranean food that has been around for millenia.

16. Sure. If you have a food processor, you're in business.
2 to 3 cloves garlic
1 can garbanzo beans (chickpeas), drained and liquid reserved
2 to 3 tablespoons tahini (sesame paste)
A handful fresh parsley leaves
1 lemon, zested and juiced
Pinch freshly ground black pepper
Pinch kosher salt
1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Chop the garlic finely in a food processor. Add the beans and 1/2 of the reserved liquid and process finely or to desired consistency. Add the tahini, parsley, lemon zest and juice, black pepper, and salt. Process until it forms a paste. Drizzle in the olive oil and process until it reaches the consistency of mayonnaise.

You don't even need one of those HUGE processors. I make my hummus in a Cuisinart Mini-Prep, which costs about 40 bucks. For an additional flavor, add a few roasted red peppers (from a jar).

18. No, but then again, I'll go across the island to eat pupus!
"pupu" in Polynesia means any kind of hors d'oeuvre. Opihi's, at any rate, do not bear any resemblance whatsoever to excrement :-)

24. Never thought about it
You came up with something I've never ever thought about! Now that I do think about it, it doesn't bother me.

But I'm Jewish and used to weird guttural words for food- even the ones that aren't guttural can be odd- Chulent, gefilte fish, stuffed derma, kasha varnishkes....hummus is tame in comparison.
