I just came home from a concert by the Soweto Gospel Choir, a South African ensemble that is currently touring the U.S. Their concert was part of a series that I bought, but I was able to persuade a few people from my church to attend, too.
The house manager (an acquaintance) told me that the hall was sold out and that they were going to set up standing room.
The performance was well worth it. A choir of men and women in ethnic dress, two traditional drummers, and a modern ensemble of keyboard and guitars came out and rocked the house, beginning with traditional tribal songs, some accompanied by spirited dancing. Singing in five African languages and English, they moved on to African Gospel songs, American Gospel songs, pop and reggae songs (including the song on which "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" was based), and finally the South African national anthem.
The audience gave them a standing ovation, whereupon they came out and did three more numbers, including one that showcased their marvelous drummers.
The choir was really impressive. I lost track, but it seemed as if most (perhaps all) took a turn at soloing, and it was hard to decide which soloist was best.
This group is definitely worth seeing if they come to your city! Lydia gives them
