Why is school cafeteria food always so awful?
When I went to tech I had to eat at the cafeteria. Meat always tough and fatty, vegetables always overcooked. I lost a lot of weight.

1. My High School's caf had great food.
The cooks were several sicilian ladies. My aunt being one of them.

2. I don't know about where you eat,
but in my school it is a lot of government issue crap. Govt. stuff used to be good, but it is going downhill fast. :(

6. Lowest bidder
The "food" has more in common with the plate that its on & that plasticware you use to shovel it into your mouth than it does with anything grown on a fram.

5. Well, when you're hungry, almost anything tastes good.
The school cafeteria food I experienced was in grades 1-12. Mostly, I tried the food early on in grades 4-6. Milk was 2 1/2¢ a pint. Ice cream bars were just 10¢. But, that was a long time ago. You could buy a "complete" lunch for 35¢.

And, it all tasted so good on an empty stomach, if you could afford it.

7. The food at my school tastes good but..
most of it is 600+ calorie junk such as pizza bread, curly fries, hot dogs, bean burritos, and giant hamburgers.

8. I Got Free Lunches
And, sometimes, that was ALL I got all day...and when you're hungry, it tastes good. Damn, I shudder to imagine some of the things I ate back then, but, damn, when it's all you can get, you'll eat it and not complain.

9. When I went to elementary school back in the dark ages...
The food was totally disgusting and generally sported a nice hair garnish. :puke: I never touched anything but the milk & carrot sticks. It's no wonder I was skinny as a rail. :eyes:

11. My school cafeteria was awesome...
I still remember them taking the day-old rolls, them putting a hole in the center of each one, and pouring a cinnamon/butter/sugar mixture over them. I still pine for them to this day.

Now, my current cafeteria where I teach? A different story. Hateful ladies serving awful food.

They're scared to death they're going to run out of food...

If there is one spot where it should not matter if the district loses money, it is the cafeteria. Especially in a poor school like mine. Just like someone said earlier... sometimes, it's all these kids get.

12. I loved the turkey roll and mashed potatoes
with the wierd clear green gravy. Or the turkey a la king.

Then when I transfered to a different high school, the best thing was the hamburger and tater tots. They did offer a salad bar with these super crunchy and super buttery bread sticks. The pizza was okay.

The schools seem to use mostly government commodities, so it was nothing but pretend meat and vegetables canned years ago. But, the two schools I went to seemed to make do pretty well. The hamburger and salad bars were not covered by the school lunch program so had to be paid for in cash.
