Chris Rock's comments about Tim Robbins & John Kerry
Well,

I was expecting more from Chris Rock and got less. He truly disappointed when he made the comment about Tim Robbin's "and bores us with his politics". Tim and Susan TELL THE TRUTH.
This was completely UNNECESSARY.

Also, he made a comment about John Kerry not being married to Oprah already and gleefully she made a face to him "Chris, not nice" which was EXCEELLENT on her part. I was proud of her.

Chris's comments about Tim and John Kerry were totally RIDICULOUS. We should all be on the same team in light of what's happening.

He's a comedian and since he was hosting a program that people from both parties will be watching he has to be neutral.

77. Tim is cool
and he proved that by coming out grinning. Self-awareness seems to be lost on wingnuts. You won't find self-deprecation coming from the likes of Newt, Sean, Bill O. (especially Bill O.), or Rush. They're too fired up with corporate-fueled zeal. And too insecure.
Why shouldn't Tim laugh? He's confident. He won an Oscar last year. And he's on the side of those who love America.

17. Hm
It's fantastic when he attacks Bush et al, but when he does the same to Kerry and Robbins, he's worthy of dunning.

I don't much like that.

Rock is a comedian. He can and should mock everything and everyone he chooses to. We can't cheer him at one turn and then boo him at another. The basic hypocrisy tastes bad in my mouth.

I dunno, not being clear because I'm brainfried from trying to boil 150 years of American foreign policy down to 2,500 words. I may not be making sense, but in my gibbered opinion I think you should lay off Rock. If we can't take some playful mockery thrown our way from time to time, we're useless.

19. Rock was just okay
Strictly from an entertainment point of view, I'll take Billy Crystal any day. Rock's monologue was entertaining and the Bush knocks were pretty funny.

I thought the Robbins remark was out of line because he was introducing him when he said it. The Kerry remark was funny and I think even Kerry probably would have laughed.

On the other hand, I though Sean Penn's criticizing Rock over the Jude Law joke ended up making Penn look humorless.

Jude Law has been in a zillion movies this year, and Rock was just ragging on that. Everyone knows Law is a great actor -- actually, SEAN PENN himself beat him out for Best Actor last year. Lighten up! It's the Oscars!

21. That "Quirp" Re Tim & Susan's Politics...
was "reverse-psychology." You either did not receive the joke in the manner in which it was received by most of us, or you didn't quite understand. Tim Robbin's "and bores us with his politics" was meant to be punning just the opposite.

And regarding Kerry, I took it as more of a small jive to Oprah's wealth, not against Kerry. That was Rock's way of getting their names in.

As far as the Oaf in Office... he "got" the Pimp. I mean Chimp, and the Idiot still probably didn't "get it!"

He was obviously being sarcastic with the Tim Robbins remark and the joke about Kerry and Oprah was funny. You can't take your politics too seriously and he's a comedian, his JOB is to make EVERYONE laugh.

It's obvious who didn't have a sense of humor at the Oscars, Sean Penn.

55. I thought Rock's whole routine was
tired -- his best lines were the one about holding the show in the parking lot -- after all those dorkey presentations in the stands -- and the come back to Sean, about talk to my accountants. He's obviously clever on his feet -- but the routine was crappy, even if it did bash Bush, very forced. And I didn't appreciate the fat joke on Moore regarding Super Size Me, either. What we're going to get from this in your face routine is a whole bunch of Hollyweird bashing, tomorrow. It wasn't necessary and it wasn't even funny. The whole show lacked the class of other years.

31. Chris Rocked! He chided lots of people & Kerry himself jokes about the $
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 12:15 AM by ultraist
Kerry has joked about "marrying into money, TWICE. "

Rock also joked about celebrities:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/27/movies/oscars/27oscars.html?hp=&adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1109567220-+ThK311JHswW3InFGOgjCQ

Rock chided some celebrities by name and included one mild three-letter word, but his routine was fairly clean for the comedian known for a foul mouth in his standup act.

``The only acting you ever see at the Oscars is when people act like they're not mad they lost,'' Rock said. He recalled the year when Halle Berry won and fellow nominee ``Nicole Kidman was smiling so wide, she should have won an Emmy at the Oscars for her great performance. I was like, if you'd done that in the movie, you'd have won an Oscar, girl.''

46. "totally RIDICULOUS"

I hope you'll pardon me for a moment while I let you know that

!!!!HE'S A COMEDIAN!!!!!

Or in the words of Foghorn Leghorn, "It's a JOKE, son! Don't ya get it!"

If you don't laugh at you're own caricature once in awhile, you'll go mad, which seems to have happened to quite a number of people taking themselves a wee bit too seriously lately.

Sheesh.

Not everything is a conspiracy. Not everything deserves outrage. It was a joke. Tim Robbins laughed.

It's not like people don't know Rock's politics.

Didn't bother me.

60. He's just following in the tradition of "insult comics" like Don Rickles:
no one is safe, and no thing is sacred. This goes back to the tradition of jesters. They say, and get away with saying, things that people are uncomfortable voicing out loud, particularly about those in power, or with celebrity. Of course we appreciate when he takes digs at the repugs, but only someone humorless can't take some ribbing--remember how nastily Eminem reacted to Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (Robert Smigel)? It is an honor to be made fun of; means one is enough in the spotlight to attract the digs.

I got the sense that Rock was being facetious when he slammed Robbins, and I'd wager that Robbins thought it was great. Robbins got his message out, despite the jokes; did you notice his blinged out peace symbol tie tack?

I like how Rock deflated the self-importance of the whole event, by visiting real people at the local movie theater and asking if they'd seen any of the movies that were nominated. The cameo by Albert Brooks was fun.

Also, after laying into Jude Law, he mentioned how many movies Jude has been in. I'm sure Jude thought it was funny, and is having the last laugh, all the way to the bank, and it doesn't hurt that many young women think he is hot.

Chris made fun of himself, as well. If anything, I thought he could have let out more of the stops, but was just being respectful. At the end of the show, he obviously seemed dazzled that he got to host it.

64. I didn't hear the Kerry thing, but the Tim Robbins
was a joke. I thought it was funny -- Tim seemed to, as well. It only means he's known as much for his advocacy as for his acting skills. That's not a bad thing, really.

65. For the love of Pete...
... he was cracking a joke. I want to be like the right in that I want 'our' people to go after the other side with all claws extended.

One thing I don't want to do is get the thin skin the right has. They have thin skin because they know they are full of shit and they cannot abide any cracks in the facade.

Tim Robbins is a bigger man than that, as are his ideas and views. It will take a lot more than a one-liner from Chris Rock ( who I like ) to scratch him.

71. That is NOT what happened.
First, he slammed Bush in a glorious, wonderful slamfest. He's host of the Oscars -- he roasted EVERYONE, including himself. What he said about Robbins and Sarandon was very tongue-in-cheek, you could tell. The Kerry things was on the bubble, but Oprah didn't respond gleefully at all: she pulled a "I can't believe you said that face," then laughed a little.

Again, Rock's slam at Bush was great, and I know it pissed off Freepers. How do I know this? My BIL is one, and he turned off the Oscars as soon as Rock started ragging on Bush.

If you found that hard to watch, you'd be curled up in the fetal position weeping after an episode of The Daily Show during the primary season and subsequent election cycle.

We can have no dissention. We must be completely humorless less we show weakness.

How ridiculous.

By the way, Sean Penn is an ass-hat.

86. Robbins' Oscar history makes him fair game
One year, as presenters, Mr. Robbins along with Ms. Sarandon interjected political commentary into the presentation (Sorry, I forget the year).

On a subsequent ceremony where they were again presenters, David Letterman introduced them as the couple who are "pissed off about something."

87. His comments on Jude Law were nasty
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 11:01 AM by Julius Civitatus
and very unnecessary. In a ceremony where the big Hollywood honchos pat each other on the back, it's refreshing to see some self-deprecating or some self-bashing humor. It always happens on the opening ceremony. The host always makes some jokes here and there about some of the nominees...

But now, Chris Rock singled out an actor who wasn't even nominated for an Oscar this year, and bashed him over and over again. He wouldn't let go. I found this to be a little bit unfair, because many of those actors worked their asses off to be where they are now. Not all of them are like that; a great deal of Hollywood's top billing actors are there because of nepotism. Many of them are there because they are the son or daughter of a previous Hollywood star. When it comes to nepotism, Hollywood has no rival in any industry.

Now, Jude Law is one exception. Hilary Swank is another. Law is one of those guys who had to work his ass off to get where he is now. It takes many years of living as a "starving artist" and talent to finally become a working actor. So he was in every movie that came out last year, and that's awful. Yes, I agree. Blame his agent. His agent should avoid over-exposure, or they'll burn him before his time.

I liked Chris Rock's intro in general, and the comparison of Bush and The Gap was priceless. I did not like how he went further than necessary with his barbs on some fellow artists. I'm sure the bit about "wait until you get a real star to make a movie" probably pissed off many at that venue. While a certain level of self-basing in that very decadent ceremony is definitely welcome, but to pick pick on some specific actors and trash them in public TV, to a world-wide audience is very bad PR. It doesn't look good, and it doesn't make him look good in the industry. This type of trashing bit can kill someone's career or stop it in its tracks, seriously.

I doubt he will be invited to host again, just because of that level of unpredictability. I'm sure there are a handful of agents and producers complaining to the Academy for the intro trashing.

95. I don't think his barbs were any nastier than Martin's 2 yrs ago or
Billy Crystal's last year. And I highly doubt anyone there was offended by his comments about stars. It isn't like Hollywood isn't aware of the star system, and Rock was making fun of that as much as the struggling actors. As if Pootie Tang would have been a good movie had they only gotten a star like Denzel instead of Rock.
